The Man on the White Horse who Saved the Sierra Nevada “If you’ve seen one Redwood, you’ve seen them all…” that is not the kind of thing you would expect to hear from someone who single handedly “saved the Sierra.” But said gentleman did in fact utter such a phrase whilst residing in the White House. Years prior however, while governor of California, said gentleman, Ronald Reagan rode out into the Sierra Nevada Mountains on a white horse and made a decision that would forever impact the Sierra Nevada […] Jesse Cassidy | May 27, 2015 3 Comments
Mammoth, CA Weekend Powder Report: Last Saturday, was a powder day at Mammoth, CA. We watched it snow heavily on the mountain Friday evening on the webcams and knew that Saturday was going to be special. Before bed, we saw about 4″ of new snow on the patio furniture at mid-mountain. We got to Mammoth early on Saturday and grabbed first chair on Chair 23rd. We weren’t disappointed. The snow was 4-5″ deep and plastered on everything. You could go fast and arc huge turns down Chair 23. […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | May 26, 2015 1 Comment
4 Ski Resorts STILL OPEN in North America: Memorial Day brought powder to Colorado and Mammoth, CA and Arapahoe Basin, CO. Mammoth ended up with a 5″ powder day on Sunday that was too fun. Mammoth is now closed for the season, but we’re blown away they were able to stay open from mid November until Memorial Day on the worst snowfall season on record. Thanks Mammoth. Oregon, Colorado, Vermont, and Canada are still in the game. Let’s all get out there and get after it while we still can. Ah, Springtime… Park, pipe, shorts, bikinis, hot tubs, hot springs, ice cream, beer, beer guts, sunglasses, stinky sunscreen, hot dogs, […] Industry News SnowBrains | May 26, 2015 1 Comment
Mammoth, CA Conditions Report: 3rd Mini-Powder Day of the Week Mammoth experienced its 2nd mini-powder day in a row yesterday – 3rd of the week. 2-3 inches of new snow covered the mountain and the layer underneath the snow was soft. You could ski nearly as fast as you wanted. There were a few more people out than the day before, but it was still mostly vacant. I skied solo and was able to ski 4 of the chute/gullies off the top first. I arrived at 8:30am and by 9:30 the mountain became socked in by cloud and was never released. Once […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | May 23, 2015 1 Comment
Mammoth, CA Report: A Moody, Empty, Creamy, Mini-Powder Day I skied Mammoth Mountain today solo. I rode Chair 23 for an hour without seeing nor hearing another skier or rider. There was 2-4″ of new, wet snow on top of a soft under layer. You could go fast. You could speed check. The skiing was damn good. The ski day began with cloud and sun. The ski day ended completely socked in and snowing. At 1:04pm, thunder began to clap loudly to the north. It got closer every run. At 1:18pm, they closed the mountain. The thunderstorm was approaching. Since closing, it hasn’t stopped snowing. […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | May 21, 2015 5 Comments
Mammoth, CA Conditions Report: An Adaquate 1″ Powder Day Mammoth ski resort in California experienced a vicious 1″ powder storm last night. When we awoke, we saw that there was only 1″ of new snow and we decided to wait and show up at 11am once things had softened up a bit. When we got to the hill, we could see fresh tracks coming down from Chair 23 and we began to ponder: “could this be a horribly good 1″ powder day?” In fact, it was. Once up on 23, we found the skiing buttery with blown in snow and a chalky base. As of 11:30am, the […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | May 18, 2015 1 Comment
Mammoth, CA Weekend Report: Sunshine, Snowfall, & the Hulk… Mammoth ski resort in California just received 23″ of new snow in the past week and extended their season until Memorial Day, May 25th. The most recent snow came this past Thursday night and freshened things up to the tune of 5″ of new snow. That new snow wasn’t quite enough to make things bottomless, but it was enough to make Saturday great. Saturday was the first time it got warm after the new snow on Thursday and it made the skiing fun. On Saturday, the sun came out and the off-piste skiing from Chair 23 was soft and malleable. Wipe Out, skiers left of Chair 23, was our […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | May 17, 2015 1 Comment
Mammoth, CA Conditions Report: 5″ Powder Day Today Mammoth ski resort in California got 5″ of snow yesterday during the day. It stopped snowing in the afternoon, but Chair 23 wasn’t open yesterday and we high hopes. The Squaw crew ended up on the 1st chair on Chair 23 and we weren’t quite sure what to expect. You could tell that there was likely some reef under the new 5″ of snow, but we hoped that we’d stay off the reef beneath. Once the chair opened around 8:15am, We charged down and […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | May 15, 2015 7 Comments
