Mt. Shasta, CA Conditions Report: 4-6″ New Snow

mt shasta report

At our climb debrief Sunday afternoon, the guides came off the mountain raving about the great conditions on Mt. Shasta. You know it must be good when they reach the summit on Sunday and turn around early Monday morning to head right back up on their day off. The recent weather pattern has been a fairly “normal” spring. At any moment it could be snowing, sunny, windy, hot, cold, or complete whiteout. It changes frequently and when the sunny card turns up it can be magnificent This is what we experienced this past weekend. At 3:00am Sunday morning, the snow and wind howled and our climb teams forged […]

Mt. Shasta Conditions Report: 2-Feet of New Snow

mt. shasta backcountry ski powder

There is one truth is backcountry skiing; you better enjoy the up. You’re going to spend the majority of your day skiing uphill and a fraction of the time ripping turns and blasting pow on the way down. And if we’re being totally transparant, the skiing conditions can be a veritable mixed bag, from all time epic to challenging crusts that test the hardiest of skiers. Such was our day. We had high hopes, 2 feet of new snow, the temps were staying cool, the sun was out and all of Northern California and Southern Oregon converged on Mt. Shasta; from Tahoe refugees to storm chasing […]

Mt. Shasta Conditions Report: 10+ Inches of Fresh Snow

With new snow and cooler than normal temps there really was no choice but to head up the mountain and check on ski and avalanche conditions, cracked ribs or not!

Monday was a bit of a surprise to see stars in the morning so we left SMG HQ for a quick hike up the gulch. There are few vistas more inspiring than a newly frosted Mt. Shasta. The first round brought 8-10″ of new light density snow, perhaps a foot in places with gusty blowing winds above 9,000′

Mt. Shasta Evades CA Drought | Snowpack @ Average | Report:

March has arrived and we find ourselves in a mild high pressure weather window. Hardly the lion we were hoping for, but we can enjoy the snow coated Mt. Shasta while tracking the jet stream for our next storm system. Historically March can be very wintery and wet in Northern California, there is some hope on the horizon for additional snow next week. And despite the talk of drought, we have been very fortunate on Mt. Shasta to receive significant storms this year to put our snow […]

Mt. Shasta, CA Backcountry Report: 3+ Feet of New Snow

Wow, what a storm! Over 3 feet of new snow fell on Mt. Shasta and town at 3,600′ shattered the rainfall record with 4.87″ measured on Friday. The old record of 2.87″ was set in 1908. And there is more on the way. The snowfall on the mountain was extreme and coming in sheets, the tracks would refill in a matter of minutes. It’s always quite a thrill to experience the ferocity of a Mt. Shasta winter storm and this one didn’t disappoint. This is fantastic news on every level, a good boost to our snowpack and reservoirs is just what we need in the Golden State. The […]
