Monster Storm Slamming South America Now | Ski Resort Snow Total & Photo Tour:

portillo powder chile

Chile and Argentina are getting hammered right now. Some weather men are saying this may be the largest storm to hit central Chile in the past 5 years. Originally, central Chile had 19-feet of snow forecast in 4 days this week. It likely won’t add up that high, but it’s still gonna be deep and already is. It’s starting to appear that El Nino is kicking in South America and this very well may be the year to get yourself down to Chile & Argentina and start taking advantage of it. SASS Global Travel‘s flagship SASS Argentina program is poised and ready to get you down here and stuff you into the big powder […]

Portillo got 25-inches of snow last night has 4.2-Feet (56″) of snow forecast for just today. This video is from Friday July 31, 2015 in Ski Portillo, Chile. The Lower Toilet Bowl is one of my favorite lines here in Ski Portillo. I came into the last air a little too far to the right and clipped some rocks just […]

Big Mountains, Decent Snow and Skiing in July | Portillo, Chile Trip Report

Skiing in the Southern Hemisphere is an experience. There is something about skiing fresh snow in July that doesn’t compute in your head…its supposed to be sunny, I’m supposed to be at the beach or something, but rather I’m skiing 5″ of fresh snow in late July in Chile…weird. Once you get over the mind block that says this isn’t right, its nothing but good, muy bueno. If you want to ski in the Southern Hemisphere during the North American summer you have two […]

Portillo, Chile Conditions Report: Chalky, Variable & a Whole lot of Fun

Despite a severe lack of snow, and a opening date that kept being pushed back, Portillo is skiing great right now. Two weeks ago Portillo saw almost 6.5 feet, allowing the resort to open for the first time all season. Since then snow has been scarce, but what is left is holding up well. The groomers are fast, and certain […]

Portillo, Chile Conditions Report: Flipping Good

portillo chile backflip

The snow is really fun right now. The groomers are in great shape. Garganta is a blast. It’s nice and chalky and really edge-able. You have to step over some rocks to get into it, but after that it’s great. Roca Jack and Caracara have good coverage but the north facing aspects are very sun affected from the warm temperatures lately. Their is some really fun skiing to be had off the traverse on the south facing aspects. You can still find some soft nice snow. The Lake Run is also skiing really well. I talked to some people who went heli skiing on Saturday and they said it was “awesome!” […]

Portillo, Chile still doesn’t have a flake of snow right now. They hoped to open by June 20th, then July 9th, and now they’ve pushed their opening date back to To Be Determined since there is still no snow and no snow in the forecast. Portillo isn’t alone in its lack of snow. Valle Nevado, Farallones, El Colorado, La Parva, and Ski Arpa are all currently without snow. VIDEO: Portillo, Chile 2014 Season Highlights

Portillo, Chile ski jump

I spent my fourth season ski instructing, coaching, and freeskiing in the legendary Ski Portillo, Chile. It sits along the edge of La Lugana del Inca surrounded by jagged and awe inspiring 13,000 foot peaks. The views are amazing and the skiing is even better. Portillo offers some of the best off-piste skiing in the world. There is everything from steep technical chutes to wide open bowls. With a little bit of hiking the possibilities are […]

Portillo, Chile Conditions Report: From Bone Dry to Powder Fly

This video proves, once again, that Portillo has incredible terrain. Wow. Northern Chile has had a dry winter this year. Portillo is the furthest north ski resort in Chile that we know of. It sits at the same latitude as San Diego, CA. Just last week Portillo released this statement on their Facebook page and their website: “Most of our lifts are functioning and all of the major slopes have adequate snow […]

Portillo, Chile Season Update Video: June, July & August

editor’s note: Um… Portillo has way sicker terrain than we thought it did. Might be time to make a trip to Portillo… by Andrew Rumph We started out with a great start of the season with tons of snow in June but then it didn’t snow for about 3 weeks in July. The end of July we had three storms and conditions were amazing. The best day of the season was a week and a half ago on Aug. 1st. The day after we had a huge wind event and all of the new snow was blown away and we were left with the rock hard base. Now we are in a freeze thaw […]

Portillo, Chile Conditions Report & Photo Tour:

I skied Portillo from July 26 to August 1. Sorry for the late posting, but the moral of the story remains the same: book your flight to Santiago. Although this isn’t the best season for snow at Portillo, with parts of Chile in a drought, the conditions were awesome. The hotel is world class, as are the staff and ski instructors, who I believe are some of the best ski instructors from all over the world, gathered in one place. Maybe it’s all the orange signs in front of Andarivel Roca […]

US Ski Team Racing Efforts THWARTED by Large Powder Storm in Portillo, Chile on Saturday…

The US Ski Team’s downhill racing efforts were viciously thwarted in Chile over the weekend by a nasty snowstorm that forced them to stop racing and ski deep powder all day long. We talked to US Ski Team member and local Squaw ripper, Travis Ganong, on Saturday to get a feel for just how horrible he was feeling about the huge dump of powder snow at Portillo, Chile. We just had 3 simple questions: SB: How much snow did Portillo get? Travis: The Portillo website was reporting […]

Why is Portillo Called “The Cruiseship”? | Photo Tour

One of the things that makes Portillo, Chile so darn special is it’s cruise ship like feel.  The resort is so remote that it is it’s own entity, far from any town, or city, excluding the Chilean army barracks just down the highway.  The resort has no “ski town” associated with it.  There is an absence of winding suburb-like streets […]
