Friday Fun: A Ben & Jerry’s… Beer? The day has finally come. VT’s own Ben & Jerry’s and Colorado’s New Belgium Brewing Co. have teamed up to create an ice cream inspired brew – the “Salted Caramel Brownie” brown ale. The beer, which won’t hit shelves until fall, will be “laden with chocolaty, salted-caramel, vanilla goodness, while helping Protect Our Winters combat climate change,” according to the packaging. While a sixer of this may sound sickeningly sweet, there’s more to the story than ice cream beer. Both companies are “B-Corps” with strong histories of social activism, and Ben & Jerry’s Senior Global […] ameliatraynor | April 17, 2015 0 Comments
Kicking Horse Update: Nipple Deep Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has powder. ‘Nough said. During a week that has seen a pineapple express decimate ski hills all over BC and Washington, you don’t have to say much to sell a resort. The fact that we are skiing makes KHMR a destination. I don’t even need to bring up the 40cm we’ve had in the last 24hrs, but because my parents told me to share, I will. February 6th and 7th have been the deepest days of the year and they’ve come just when people had lost hope in the winter. To start, there is a definite freezing level sitting at the top of Catamount […] Conditions Report Guest Author | February 7, 2015 1 Comment
Surprise! Blower Pow Day at Kicking Horse, B.C. Sunday, January 18th was a classic day at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Only a few centimeters is predicted. You wake up and check the snow report; 1cm. Disappointed, you look outside and see nearly 20cm on your car. Surprise! Pow Day! This is what happen when a storm rolls in at 6am and drops a load after all the snow reports have gone out. To top it all off, no fair weather skiers show up and the lifts are empty. Despite being caught off guard and showing up an hour after the lifts crack, first tracks could be had line after line. North facing chutes were skiing a touch deeper than the south because of wind deposits. […] Conditions Report Guest Author | January 19, 2015 0 Comments
Crystal Mountain Conditions Report 1/4/14 – Graybird Ripping After the drop in temps and snowfall of last weekend, this week saw clear skies and cold temperatures at Crystal Mountain. The high pressure broke down yesterday with the arrival of a new storm front bringing 3-5” of new snow and the threat of rain. Since any skiing is better than no skiing, the call was to go see what the weather brought to Crystal. Pulling into the parking lot around 9am, the temps were hovering around 30*, much better than expected […] Conditions Report Chaz Diamond | January 4, 2015 0 Comments
Colorado Backcountry Report: Front Range Freshies with More to Come! Last weekend provided some long-awaited powder. The next few days look to provide even more. Tonight, the jet stream drops directly over Colorado, bringing over 4″ of precipitable moisture over the next 3 days. This might translate to 2+ feet for the northern mountains! After the base building storm last weekend, we should see the best skiing of the year as low tide may finally be over! Weather Marc Doherty | December 20, 2014 0 Comments
Tioga Pass, CA Report: Chuting Ellery Bowl in Pow on May 7th It’s May 6, 2014 and it’s dumping big fat wet flakes in June Lake, Ca. Is it accumulating? No. But at only 7,800 ft, that’s not surprising in spring. It has to be sticking above 10,000 ft. Right? Right?! After a meager — but fun — winter every little scrap garners excitement, at least in me. Most sane people around these parts are climbing in the Gorge or Yosemite or the Happy’s. But there are definitely a few of us diehards out there. You know who you are, all 20 of you. I’m sure you were out there, somewhere, on this same day. If we ever meet, I’ll buy you a drink. Sleeper Pow Day | Crystal Mountain Conditions Report 3/28/14 What is hot pow? The best answer we could come up with was ‘something like cheese on yesterday’s pizza after it’s been micro-waved for too long.’ Doesn’t sound fun. With temperatures hovering just below freezing for the past few days, we heard Crystal was getting the goods, but who actually knew. Maybe it rained to 6000′, maybe it was pow? You don’t know unless you go, so we went. Arriving at the Crystal Parking lot to find snow in the trees was a awesome and set […] Conditions Report Chaz Diamond | March 29, 2014 0 Comments
