Lake Tahoe, CA, Backcountry Report: The Neatest Line I’ve Skied This Season | Alaska Style Terrain in California

Report from March 13, 2024 Yesterday we went for a new zone. A zone I’d never been to before. When we got there, our eyes were ablaze… The sun was irradiating a crystalline white snow surface full of playful features. It appeared to be all powder. I dropped first taking an air entry off the cornice. “Whap!” went my skis […]

Golden solstice light, blower powder, blue skies, cold […]

VIDEO: What It Looks Like to Ski a Spine Pillow in Japan

One of the magical aspects of japan is that some of the spines here grow pillows. They’re difficult to figure out to ride and I still haven’t perfectly greased one of these spicier ones yet, but it’s insanely fun figuring them out. They change hugely from year to year. This year, the upper pillows are three times bigger than they were last year. I cut the first two pillows out of the video as they have no flow. Just two 10 to 15-foot acid drops to uphill landings. Still damn fun, though. […]

Nothing But Spines in Whistler: Peter Wentz’s Spine POV

Peter Wentz is a good buddy of mine from Squaw and Bariloche who is now the SnowBrains Whistler reporter.  The kid can shred and knows where the good terrain in the Whistler area lives. Last winter, he got the chance at a few spectacular spine skiing days via motorsled and helicopter up in Whistler.  This is what he saw.

One Week in Japan | Photo Tour:

The "Adventure Zone", Japan. photo: snowbrains

These four photos represent last week in Japan. It’s been snowing like crazy with more snow on the ground before New Years Day 2015 than we had here all of last season. We had three weeks of horribly deep snow and then it rained and got cold… Damn. But it was insane while it lasted and it’ll come around soon. The forecast for the next week is surprisingly dry for Japan in January. Hopefully they’re wrong and we get right back into what you see here. […]
