Mt. Moran, Wyoming Conditions Report: Summer Solstice Party Ski 12,605-foot Moran is a classic mountain, and skiing the skillet is mega classic, so in order to make it obscure, we decided to have a summer solstice party and also ski during a snowstorm. The rest of the trip was clear and sunny, but we nailed the timing and became engulfed in a cloudy, white-out snowstorm just as we were arriving at the summit. And, right as we finished the ski, it got sunny again. That was obscure I think. I bet most people don’t try to do that. “I was surprised that the edit showed so many close ups of my face.” Said Silas, the star of the edit. Trip Report: Skiing Big Lines in Grand Teton National Park, WY Typically, we wake up around 3 am or earlier, and drink mattรฉ for the hour and a half drive through Jackson and into the park. Up high in the mountains this spring has been rather cold, with frequent snowstorms, which has created deep stable pow for a good amount of days. On some days, it seemed almost everything was in perfect pow ski conditions.Putting in the iPod, and clicking in the skis, we begin our approach in the dark, with the light of our headlamps illuminating the path through through the flats underneath the dark towering mountains. Moving fast and feeling […] Trip Report Guest Author | June 3, 2014 1 Comment
Eastern Sierra Backcountry Report: 13,225′ Mt. Emerson 10 years down the road, which days in the backcountry will you remember as though they were yesterday? The fun days party lapping your favorite stash, or the bizarre days trying to do something ridiculous? The days when everything goes perfectly, or the days when everything is a struggle? Every day is great in its own way, but the day that Ryan, Ben, and I went up Emerson in mid-May of a year with record-low snow […] Conditions Report Guest Author | May 14, 2014 3 Comments
Backcountry Trip Report: “The Chutes” @ Mt. Rose, NV The Chutes at Mt. Rose ski resort in Nevada were a forbidden fruit of Lake Tahoe for many years. The Chutes first opened in December 2004 and people were fired up. The Chutes gave Mt. Rose some of the steepest, consistent terrain in Tahoe. Before the Chutes opened they were most often skied before Rose opened or after they closed. Mt. Rose closed a couple of weeks ago […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | April 28, 2014 5 Comments

Big Adventure on Elephantโs Perch, Sawtooth Mts, Idaho | Climb & Bivy on Mountaineerโs Route (5.9 III) Back in May, my brother Andrew and I set a goal for ourselves: to climb the Elephantโs Perch by the end of the season. The Elephantโs Perch is a 9,870โฒ peak located in the Sawtooth Wilderness outside of Stanley, ID. While not the tallest alpine wall in Idaho, it is arguably the highest quality and most popular alpine rock face in the state. First climbed in 1963 by the accomplished mountaineer Fred Beckey and friends, there are now over 25 established routes on the Perch, ranging from […] Conditions Report Michael Dunning | October 30, 2013 1 Comment
October Corn Harvest on Mt. Baker, WA | VIDEO: 10,781-foot Mount Baker in Washington state got 13 feet of snow at its summit in late September. Since then, itโs been warm and dry. Perfect conditions for a high quality corn harvest. The โWhatโs Upโ crew was on it and this video is what they have to show for it. Yes, we think they look weird, too. Gotta give it to them, though, […] Conditions Report SnowBrains | October 24, 2013 1 Comment
