Vail, CO Is Attempting to Permanently Ban Marijuana Recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado. However, the town of Vail has put a temporary ban on marijuana sales in 2014. Vail is now trying to make that temporary ban permanent. On Tuesday night, the Vail Town Council will consider the first reading of a permanent ban on marijuana sales in Vail. That ban could be potentially overturned by the same town council in the future. Colorado passed Amendment 64 and legalized recreational marijuana in 2012. This amendment gives towns and counties the ability to ban retail marijuana operations if desired. Very few towns and counties have chosen to do so. Colorado Supreme Court Rules on In-Bound Avalanche Liability When skiing in-bounds, you probably aren’t thinking about the potential of a deadly avalanche – resorts take care of that, right? But in a single day in 2012, two men died in avalanches IN BOUNDS on open trails in Colorado. Taft Conlin from Eagle County, only 13-years old, died in a snowslide on the Prima Cornice trail at Vail. Christopher Norris, a 28-year old father of two, was buried in a slide within the ski area at Winter Park. Both tragic deaths spurred lawsuits, and the Colorado […] Avalanche ameliatraynor | March 23, 2015 3 Comments

“Vail Is Not the Enemy” | By Derek Taylor (note: Derek Taylor was the editor of Powder Magazine from 2008 to 2012. He wrote this piece for Outdoor Magazine.) Vail has gotten a lot of flak recently. Their lawyer-powered acquisition of Park City ski resort in Utah has kept them in the headlines for the past year. Vail now owns 11 ski resorts: Park City & The Canyons in Utah Kirkwood, Heavenly, & Northstar in California Beaver Creek, Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge in Colorado Afton Alps in Minnesota Mount Brighton in Michigan Some think that this enormous consolidation of the ski industry is a bad thing. Derek Taylor thinks itโs a good thing. One thing is for sure: Vailโs Epic Pass […] SnowBrains | October 8, 2014 2 Comments
VAIL: Park City & Canyons WILL CONNECT in 2015/16 Vail just bought Park City ski resort last week for $182.5 million. What many of us missed in the announcement is that they stated that they will be connecting Park City ski resort to the Canyons ski resort (also run by Vail). When these two ski resorts connect, it’ll create the largest ski resort in the USA. The Canyons has 4,000 skiable acres. Park City has 3,300 skiable acres. Combined, theyโd have over 7,400 skiable acres making it the biggest ski […] Industry News SnowBrains | September 17, 2014 4 Comments
Park City, UT Pays $17.5 Million to Operate This Winter: On Friday, September 5th, 2014 a Utah District Judge stated that Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) would have to post a $17.5 million bond to operate the Park City ski resort during the 2014/15 winter season. If they don’t post this bond, they’d be evicted and would not be able to open the ski resort this winter. Yesterday, PCMR agreed to pay the $17.5 million to operate this winter. This is great news as it means that the ski resort will be open this winter. PCMR is appealing the ruling that they have to move out and Vail is going to move […] Industry News SnowBrains | September 10, 2014 0 Comments
Did Park City Execute the Greatest Blunder of All-Time? A recent court order all but seems to have closed the book on the struggle to control the resort at Park City, Utah. In what apparently was an oversight of the most colossal variety, the former operators of Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) missed the deadline for renewing their lease. Always the opportunist, Vail Resorts swooped in and snatched it from their grasp. A shocking turn of events to say the least. Somewhere, someone at PCMR […] Andy Hays | June 24, 2014 1 Comment
Does Powdr Corp Need to Give Up It’s Fight to Get Park City Back? Powdr Corp, the former operators of Park City ski resort, made an egregious error this past year. They let their lease expire. Vail jumped on the opportunity and sued Powdr to get the resort from them. Powdr Corp sued back. Vail won. Powdr is appealing and fighting and suing Vail and the […] Industry News SnowBrains | June 10, 2014 0 Comments
