As winter approaches, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is actively promoting its Cottonwood Canyons Sticker Program. The initiative, designed to streamline traffic during snowy conditions, had drivers lining up for vehicle inspections last Wednesday morning.

The program, which first launched in 2019, runs through February 28, 2024, and offers a sticker to drivers as a form of pre-approval, indicating their vehicle meets the necessary traction requirements for winter storms. Although the sticker is not mandatory for canyon entry, it serves as a quick verification during traction law enforcement, potentially expediting travel.

To participate, drivers must complete an online form and schedule an inspection at one of the 48 designated locations. The inspection focuses on tire tread depth and the presence of chains for various types of vehicles. Successful inspections result in a sticker, while failure requires drivers to upgrade their tires accordingly.

The program, which is free of charge, also includes partnerships with rental car companies to ensure rental fleets are equipped for canyon conditions. UDOT has provided a full list of requirements and partner locations on their dedicated website.

With the ski season’s tentative start date of November 17, UDOT and law enforcement agencies are urging drivers to prepare their vehicles, slow down, and maintain safe distances on the roads during winter storms. They also recommend carpooling or using transit services to alleviate congestion in the canyons.
