No matter, it means that Kitzbühel, Austria, became the first non-glacier ski area in the Alps to open this season. They achieved this by ‘snow-farming’, a process where they gathered up snow at the end of last season into huge piles, covered it with thermal blankets to prevent it melting over summer, then pushed it out and groomed it when temperatures dropped again.
