A recent 4″ of fresh snow means Wintergreen Resort in Virginia has already passed last year’s total snowfall, marking a promising start to the 2023-24 winter season.

We received about 4 inches of fresh snow up on the mountain overnight, surpassing the total snowfall from all of last season. Snowmaking is back online and it’s looking like a winter wonderland. However, that record isn’t as incredible as it might first soundโlast season the resort didn’t get any fresh snow at all.ย Zero inches. It was the third time in 10 years the ski area received no snow, the others being 2016/17 and 2018/19. The resort averages 17″ a season, with the most in the last 10 years being 54″ in 2013/14, and in 2015/16 even received two feet of fresh from one snowstorm.
The resort began snowmaking on November 27, 2023, and thanks to this recent dump, Wintergreen is set to open on Friday, December 15.
According to Wikipedia, Wintergreen Resort is a four-season mountain resort on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, located in Nelson County, Virginia, and near the towns of Wintergreen and Nellysford. The resort is also in close proximity to the cities of Lynchburg, Waynesboro, and Charlottesville, and within a three-hour drive of Washington, D.C. It opened in 1975 and is currently owned and managed by Pacific Group Resorts, Inc. Unlike most other ski resorts, Wintergreen is an “upside-down” resort in which all of the amenities are built on the peaks and ridges, rather than at the traditional base.
