Summer-Only Ski Resort at Mount Gassan, Japan, Opens Today, April 12

Tsukiyama Ski Area at Mount Gassan in Japan announced that it will open its ski season today, April 12. The Japanese summer-only ski resort is situated in the Yamagata Prefecture of Japan’s main island Honshu, about six hours north of Tokyo. Tsukiyama at Mount Gassan is one of six summer-only ski resorts in the world.

Tsukiyama Lift Company which operates the infrastructure at Gassan shared that lifts will operate from April 12 until July 5 or 6 depending on conditions. Mount Gassan reaches an altitude of 6,509 feet (1,984 meters) and is Japan’s third highest mountain.

Lift passes for adults are ¥5,500 ($35) for a day pass or ¥4,000 ($26) for a half-day pass. The lifts operate from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the infrastructure at the resort consists of a chair lift and three surface lifts giving access to a skiable area of approximately 1.2 miles (2 km) on four beginner runs and two advanced runs. The Tsukiyama Lift Company also charges ¥1,000 ($6.50) per car which goes towards maintenance and services at the resort.
