NOAA is forecasting 14,162-foot  Mt. Shasta in California is forecast to receive 6-9 feet of snow from this weekend’s storms.  Yes, 6-9 feet of snow.

NOAA has just issued an avalanche watch for Mt. Shasta.  The storm that is rolling in right now is forecast to release many avalanches from the above tree-line slopes of Mt. Shasta.  These avalanches will be strong enough to power down into the below tree-line areas of Mt. Shasta.

Please stay away from Mt. Shasta this weekend.

Mt. Shasta owns the USA’s single storm snowfall record at 189-inches of snow that occurred from February 13th – 19th, 1959.  This weekend’s storm might come close to challenging that record.

THE USDA FOREST SERVICE MOUNT SHASTA AVALANCHE CENTER HAS ISSUED
AN AVALANCHE WATCH FOR THE MOUNT SHASTA AREA OF NORTHERN
CALIFORNIA NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH 8 PM PDT SATURDAY.

THE MOUNT SHASTA AREA IS FORECAST TO RECEIVE BETWEEN 6 TO 10
INCHES OF WATER BY MONDAY EVENING...WHICH COULD MEAN 6 TO 8 FEET
OF SNOW NEAR AND ABOVE THE TREELINE ON MOUNT SHASTA. SNOW LEVELS
WILL FLUCTUATE BETWEEN 6000 TO 8000 FEET. EXTREMELY STRONG
SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL ACCOMPANY THIS STORM WHICH WILL
PREDOMINANTLY LOAD NORTH AND EAST SLOPES WITH DEEP SNOW.

CONCERNS FOR LARGE WIND AND STORM SLAB AVALANCHES EXIST FOR ALL
ASPECTS...NEAR AND ABOVE TREELINE ON MOUNT SHASTA THIS WEEKEND.

AVALANCHES FROM THE UPPER MOUNTAIN MAY BECOME LARGE ENOUGH TO
IMPACT LOWER ELEVATION AVALANCHE RUNOUT ZONES. AVOID TRAVEL IN LOW
ANGLE RUNOUT ZONES BELOW TREELINE.

THOSE TRAVELING ON MOUNT SHASTA THIS WEEKEND SHOULD HAVE EXTENSIVE
AVALANCHE KNOWLEDGE AND USE CAREFUL ROUTE SELECTION. ALWAYS TRAVEL
WITH A PARTNER AND CARRY AN AVALANCHE BEACON...SHOVEL AND PROBE.

  1. I’m a little confused , alta Utah ? Like 800 miles apart ! Alta California ? Both are not close

  2. Alta and Mt Shasta pretty much share the same weather, since they’re right next to each other..

  3. Miles I’m no math teacher or anything (or am i?) but 9 feet times 12 inches = 108 inches. Far less than the 189 inch record. Although yes, 108 inches is an insane amount of snow!! I’m also no geography teacher but I’m pretty sure Alta is not on Mt. Shasta (or is it?) The lack of snow in Tahoe may be affecting your snow brain 🙂 Otherwise you know I think this site rules!
