Aspen Employee Last Seen Boarding Chairlift 2-Days Ago Found Dead in Very Hazardous Terrain Outside Snowmass Ski Area, CO

On Thursday, January 28, 2021, the Aspen Ski Company, Snowmass Mountain Ski Patrol (SMSP), Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA), Flight for Life, Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, Snowmass Police Department, and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office coordinated in the search for an overdue party, David Cross.

Cross a 32-year-old Carbondale resident was reported missing from a friend on Tuesday, 01/26/2021. An Investigation by the Snowmass Police Department produced information Cross was last seen boarding the Village Express Lift on Tuesday, 01/26/2021, at approximately 11:50 am. Search efforts were unsuccessful on Tuesday, 01/26/2021; and Wednesday, 01/27/2021.

On Thursday, 01/28/2021, the search effort started inbounds on Snowmass Mountain, but evidence led to a single snowboard track in the West Willow area off the Snowmass Ski area. Snowmass Ski Patrol followed the ski track and found Cross deceased in very hazardous backcountry terrain. The cause of death is unknown at this time and will be investigated by the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office.

Rescue personnel was unable to recover Cross’s body due to difficult terrain, time restraints, and safety. The decision was made to conduct a recovery mission on Friday, 01/29/2021.

Cross was in his third season working for Skico, reports Vail Daily.
