Cardrona continues to have the best conditions right now in the South Island. They have been making snow most days and about 80% of their runs are open. The coverage is almost entirely man-made snow and heavy traffic means conditions have become very icy in places.  Race Course, All Nations and Gold Rush are especially icy at the moment. Captains […]

The South Island of New Zealand was hit with massive amounts of snow in May. Early season ski touring was on with many backcountry areas skiable  that normally wouldn’t have enough snow until August. Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Tussock Ski Season

Spring skiing is at it’s finest right now at Treble Cone. Snow is softening usually by about 10.30 – 11.00 in the morning and remains in good shape all day. Conditions are especially good for Tussock skiing! For those unfamiliar with tussock is it a native New Zealand grass that grows in larger clumps in the high alpine. For those looking for an adventure it’s awesome fun to ski and/or jump over (and won’t damage your skis).

The Olympic Superpipe continues to be very well looked after and is groomed to perfection daily. Hours of operation will depend on temperatures but expect early closing times. The smaller International Superpipe isn’t being quite as maintained but remains open for most of the day. The Small, Medium and Large parks are still being kept up throughout the day with regular closures to allow take off’s and landings to be touched up. Spring is a great time to be skiing at Cardrona, the lift lines are significantly shorter now and 2 of their lifts now have extended opening hours until 5pm. High winds forced Cardrona to close this Sunday and have scoured some of the areas […]

Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Genuine Powder

Athlete Marian Krogh skiing fresh snow in the Saddle Basin

The snow at Treble Cone has been off the charts lately. It’s snowed about 10cm every day for the last week but visibility remained poor until Saturday when the clouds parted and it was a glorious bluebird. The snow has been incredibly light and fluffy – genuine powder which is unusual for New Zealand. All terrain is open at Treble Cone including many areas that didn’t open at all last season. The best skiing on the mountain is […]

Ohau, NZ Conditions Report: Fresh Lines All Day

Ohau I love to ski! Ohau, New Zealand is a skiers/snowboarders paradise that most of the world hasn’t found yet. Ohau has been hit by several storms this season depositing lots of snow but unfortunately high winds have followed most of those storms and re-deposited that snow elsewhere. The snow that is around is fresh for days but watch out for lots of hidden sharks just under the surface in more exposed areas. The summit currently has the best snow on the mountain with smooth consistent powder, it’s well worth the short hike.
