Bariloche, Argentina Backcountry Report: The Big Lines of “Alaskita”

Little Alaska is my favorite line in Bariloche. It’s not too bad of a hike, the views are stunning, and the terrain is intense. Avalanche terrain management is priority number one here. The upper spines are subject to wind loading. The middle convex rollovers are textbook avalanche start zones and the lower chutes would flush you extremely hard if anything came down. This zone is only to be played with when stability confidence is high. The wind really hammered the Catedral massif two nights ago – pressing the snow down, scouring some zones, and filling in others. Little Alaska is very prone to wind and wind loading. The last time I […]

Nevados de Chillan Conditions Report: Deep Snow, Big Wind

After a few days of poor conditions around the 3 Valley resorts we decided to pull the plug and grab a last minute flight down to Nevados de Chillan to try to hook up with the Ingrid Backstrom Women’s Camp and hit the forecasted storm. We could not have timed it better. The night drive up was an adventure with about a foot of snow on the […]

“The Great Colorado Weed Experiment” | by The New York Times

Two weeks ago, The New York times wrote a strong article stating that they are confident that it’s time that the US government finally federally legalizes marijuana. They stated their reasons for legalization and stated them powerfully. Since that article was published they’ve had a potent series of articles details why legalization is the way forward. This is their piece on Colorado and the experience Colorado has had with legal recreational marijuana. Don’t forget that Colorado has made a lot of money off marijuana taxes, has had dramatic decreases in crime rates, and had the most skier visits […]

Skier Triggered Avalanche at Catedral Ski Resort in Bariloche, Argentina Today:

A 20 minute hike from the Del Bosque chair at Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina brings you to La Laguna. La Laguna is the backcountry. No avalanche control, no patrollers, no medical equipment, no nothing. Today, there was a skier triggered avalanche at the top of La Laguna. A skier skied into this line and triggered the avalanche. He fortunately didn’t get caught in the slide. He was lucky. About 90% of the humans who hike into La Laguna have no backpacks, no […]

2 Foot Powder Day in Bariloche, Argentina: As Good As It Gets

Today was a great day at Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina. The snow was about as good as it gets here. It snowed hard and blew hard yesterday leaving us with up to two feet of semi dense, wind-pressed snow. The kind of snow you can open it up in, but can still speed check in anytime. It was also good for hucking provided you had a steep landing. It didn’t give much on flat landings… I started the day with two laps on the mellow terrain Punta Nevada […]

Portillo, Chile Conditions Report & Photo Tour:

I skied Portillo from July 26 to August 1. Sorry for the late posting, but the moral of the story remains the same: book your flight to Santiago. Although this isn’t the best season for snow at Portillo, with parts of Chile in a drought, the conditions were awesome. The hotel is world class, as are the staff and ski instructors, who I believe are some of the best ski instructors from all over the world, gathered in one place. Maybe it’s all the orange signs in front of Andarivel Roca […]

Wyoming Surf & Culture Report: A Legit River Wave

In a canyon tucked away a little south of the resort town Jackson Hole you can find a surf spot, known as a Lunch Counter Rapid. This rapid creates a glassy wave that is surfable at certain river levels, usually in between low and higher flows. In it’s prime season it is an easy walk to the river edge where you can see kayakers and surfers taking turns riding this natural phenomenon. The wave forms when a combination of runoff water from the snow pack, and releases from Jackson Lake bring the river to the range of 8,000cfs to 12,000cfs. Anything higher […]

Las Lenas, Argentina July Recap/Long Range Forecast:

To avoid beating around the bush, July was a complete bust. They may have manged one meter the entire month, with the biggest storm dropping 40 cm (16 inches). So much for the Weatherbrains prediction of a big July. The fantasy charts from the timing perspective performed really well but from the intensity perspective failed miserably. All the storms were trying to come through the ridge, instead of using the ridge as a steering […]

2014/15 Winter Weather Forecast by Award Winning Meterologist:

The overall idea this winter is to keep most of the snow in the Northeast and New England in the East. The Ohio Valley will have a near normal winter as far as snowfall and the Midwest will miss out on the big snow like last winter. The Great Plains will also see a lower than average winter for snow. The […]

Turoa, New Zealand Conditions: Bluebird Cookies and Cream

After being closed for 3 days in a row due to wind and rain, I was quite skeptical as to what the conditions would be like today. My heart would break each of the last 3 days as I would look at the time lapsed images of the Turoa webcams to see the white snow melting away and exposing that jagged, volcanic rock. Lucky for us, the temps dropped […]

Awesome Skiing Potential in Kazakhstan | Trip Report & Photo Tour:

My journey began at the Vancouver International Airport. At the bar next to Harrison, a frontiersman from up north. He was on his way to Costa Rica for his annual blowout – which was much deserved. The guy had been laying ground connecting parts of northern BC into the grid for the better part of 9 months. We were having a chat with the barista-bartender who was getting me a shipload of hops and the most basic $26 burger I have yet to have the displeasure of paying for. He set down my second pint and asked; “Where are you off to […]

6+ Feet of New Snow in a Week in Bariloche, Argentina | Report:

Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina has been closed for the past 5 days. Ripping wind, dumping snow, and pouring rain made lift operations unrealistic. It’s been a wild ride. Last weekend, Catedral got 40cms of snow right down to the base. Then it got warm, but the upper mountain still got 40cms (17 inches) on July 28th, 50cms (20 inches) on July 29th, 65cms (25 inches) on July 30th, 30cms (20 inches) on August 1st, and 20cms (8 inches) on August 2nd. That adds up to 205 cms […]

Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Rain, Lightning, Sketchy Pow, & Korean Food

It rained since we arrived in Wanaka on Tuesday and we patiently waited for the wind and lightning to stop by eating at the local Korean restaurant and fishing in the nearby rivers and making a day trip to Queenstown about an 1 hour west. Finally, the weather turned and Treble Cone reopened on Sunday and a huge crowd showed up. Only the lower mountain was open in the morning, as they were de-icing and prepping the Saddle Basin chair and terrain. There are so many obstacles and the coverage is so thin that we saw 2 ski patroller sleds come down with injured people BEFORE 10 am […]
