A record number of competitors donned their most outrageous costumes and Telemark gear at Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR), Colorado, on Sunday, March 17, for the 50th Annual Al Johnson Memorial Telemark Race. More than 200 participants climbed 660 vertical feet, then descended 1,200 feet down CBMR’s legendary double-black diamond steeps. All proceeds from the event benefit the Crested Butte Avalanche Center.

The race began at the bottom of the North Face Lift and finished at the bottom of The Last Steep, while a crowd of spectators looked on from the access point near the top of East River Express. The event was followed by an awards ceremony and after-party at Butte 66, with prizes for top finishers. Miles Morris took first place in the Men’s category with a time of 16:41.2, while Alex Riedman won the Women’s category with a time of 21:43.6.
