Yesterday afternoon, April 7, South Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to a call of a customer “licking” groceries inside of a Safeway grocery store. The suspect was subsequently arrested for felony vandalism, The City of South Lake Tahoe wrote on their website.

The report stated that when officers arrived on the scene, a Safeway employee alerted them of the suspect who was going around the store putting on unsold jewelry and licking it before adding other store items into her shopping cart. The employee then informed the officers that all the items in the suspect’s shopping cart were deemed unsellable due to the cross-contamination and possible exposure to the coronavirus. The report read,

Officers located the suspect, Jennifer Walker, a 53-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident, inside of the store with a shopping cart full of merchandise. An investigation revealed that Walker had no means to purchase any of the items.  The approximate value of the items was $1,800.

Walker was subsequently arrested for felony vandalism and was booked in the El Dorado County jail without further incident.

It is unknown if Walker has been exposed to the coronavirus but the Safeway and local authorities are not taking any chances. She is currently in the El Dorado County jail and is facing a felony vandalism charge. In the meantime, South Lake Tahoe has issued an order to stop travel by non-residents to the area as a way to prevent spread of COVID-19. Details on this can be found below.
