“An avalanche of snow, ice and rock which in its path hit the access road when there were several roped parties, some of which were swept away. The definitive number of mountaineers involved is not yet known.” – Michela Canova, emergency services spokeswoman

7 people have been confirmed dead after the Marmolada glacier collapsed in an ice avalanche in the Dolomite mountains in Italy on Monday, July 4, 2022.

8 people were injured.

15 people are missing.

Rescue personnel are currently searching for the missing.

4 of the 7 deceased have been identified by rescuers.

3 of them were Italian.

2 of them were mountain guides.

It isn’t exactly known what caused the glacier to collapse though locals are blaming the ice avalanche on recent warm temperatures of up to 50ºF.

“The heat is unusual.  That’s extreme heat.  Clearly it’s something abnormal.” – Walter Milan, rescue services spokesperson
