Police Searching for Witnesses as Argentine Skier Dies After Being Found Unconscious on the Slopes in Zermatt, Switzerland

An Argentine skier died Wednesday, January 29, after being found unconscious on a marked ski run in Zermatt, Switzerland, the cantonal police of Wallis/Valais reports. Around 3 p.m., third parties discovered the 25-year-old man lying unresponsive on Piste 9, a groomed slope between Blauherd and Tuftern in the resortโ€™s extensive ski area. They immediately alerted rescue teams, according to a statement from the cantonal police.

Ski patrol, emergency responders from the Valais rescue organization, and an Air Zermatt helicopter rushed to the scene. The skier was transported to a hospital in Sion, where he died later that afternoon. The cause of the incident remains unclear, and prosecutors have launched an investigation.

Zermatt, home to the world-famous Matterhorn, is one of Switzerlandโ€™s premier ski destinations, drawing thousands of skiers each season with its high-altitude terrain and year-round glacier skiing. The resort, known for its expansive 224 miles of slopes and breathtaking alpine views, is among the most popular in the Alps.

Authorities are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the incident to come forward and share their accounts of the incident.
