After 21 years of operating at Schweitzer, the guided snowmobile and cat skiing company transitions ownership for the 24/25 winter season

Schweitzer, Idaho, has announced the purchase of Selkirk Powder’s guided backcountry snowmobile and cat ski operation, an experience that invites guests to explore an additional 4,350 acres of skiable terrain from the backside of the resort.

“Since the early 2000s, Selkirk Powder has laid the groundwork in crafting unique backcountry experiences just beyond the resort’s boundary. We can’t wait to build upon what’s already been established and take the operation to the next level for the upcoming winter season.”

– Tom Chasse, president and COO of Schweitzer

The purchase from Selkirk Powder includes year-round access to 4,350 acres of backcountry terrain adjacent to the resort’s western boundary. Previously, the company operated through a long-term concession agreement with Schweitzer and a lease from the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL), offering guided snowcat skiing and snowmobile tours that departed from Schweitzer’s summit.

The IDL’s land lease has transferred to Schweitzer and will be used for guided snowcat ski and snowmobile tours for the 24/25 winter season. The snowcat access road is approximately six miles long, providing drop in zones to over 75 west-facing fall line trails that feature untracked powder fields and glades for intermediate to expert-level skiers and riders. For a family-friendly winter adventure, guided snowmobile tours depart from the summit and offer expansive views with tailored instruction.

Selkirk Powder’s local legacy continues out of a new location near Priest River accessing a new zone of the Selkirk Mountains–Atlasta and Casey. Details regarding a new Schweitzer cat skiing and snowmobile operation will be announced closer to winter opening day, scheduled for November 22, 2024.
