Squaw Conditions Report: Spring Marches On

As spring drags on (month 3 I think) the skiing at Squaw continues to be good despite the high temperatures and severe lack of snow. Friday at Squaw offered firm and fast groomers in the morning, and soft corn and mank in the afternoon. The high temperatures this weekend will make getting out early the call, corduroy in the morning, corn in the afternoon, and beers before 4.

Getting out early is key, as the groomers are skiing great, fast and firm. By mid-afternoon the hight temperatures and high sun angle make off trail skiable, but only for a small window. By late afternoon the snow starts to turn to mank, making apres the call. Yesterday Palisades, and the Pocket were skiing great, with late openings, and about an inch of fresh from Wednesdays system, the lines were untouched and soft. The groomers were skiing good all day, with Sibo Face, and Shirley being the call. The park is also skiing really good right now, the park crew worked out all the kinks in the jumps and the landings are soft. The skiing has been really good considering the conditions, and people are still getting out and getting after it. However, be careful out there, as people seem a bit more oblivious than usual, even the lifties are slacking. Yesterday while loading Headwall Chair, the safety bar was still down from the last riders, and I didn’t notice until to late. Another guy and I were pushed by the chair off the loading ramp down onto the dirt and rocks below as the lift sat in the shack texting or whatever. Moral of the story is be aware out there, as others may not be.

With very little time left in the season, if you haven’t been to Squaw recently, get there. Rumors are starting to fly of a April 5th close date, and while we hear these types of rumors every year, it wouldn’t surprise me if it actually happened this year. With low snow, high temperatures, and 4 dismal years stacking up, Squaw and everyone else is ready to chalk this season up as a loss and move on to summer. So get out and make turns while you can, time is running out.

  1. Thursday at Squaw was mostly good (1 inch of new bonded well) particularly most runs on headwall
    lift esp the face.

  2. Fun meeting you on the chair and talking about Mile’s season. Good report. Right on the money. Face of headwall was money.
