A skier on Buffalo Mountain in Summit County, CO is lucky to be alive today after being caught in an avalanche and thrown off a 75-foot waterfall. “It was a waterfall, lot of flowing water, lot of wet snow, very lucky individual. The terrain was extreme. 2 Skiers Caught, 1 Injured in Colorado Avalanche Yesterday

10-20″ of new snow in Colorado over the weekend lead to snowpack instability and avalanches. Two backcountry skiers were caught in an avalanche on Berthoud Pass, Colorado yesterday and both received minor injuries. “Recent observations are pointing to some weakness in the snowpack at this time. Skier Breaks Leg in Vail, CO Backcountry Avalanche:

Three skiers in their 30s were caught in an avalanche at 9am in the Pitkin Creek area near Vail ski resort on Thursday morning. All three had avalanche equipment. One of the skiers broke his leg and was taken to Vail Valley Medical Center. The avalanche danger at the time of the avalanche was rated at “Considerable” or a 3 out of 5. More people die in the “Considerable” rating than any other. The Colorado Air National Guard’s High Altitude Aviation Training Site sent a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter to rescue the injured skier.
