Eastern Sierra, CA Backcountry Report: “The Flume” Off 13,000′ Mt. Dana | Tioga Pass

Report from June 22nd, 2019 Brought to you by Scott Sports Skis Used:  Scott Super Guide 105 Saturday may have been our last backcountry ski tour of the season… There was one last chute that we’d wanted to ski off 13,000′ Mt. Dana and it looked spicy. The chute is named “The Flume” (at least that’s what we named it in situ) […]

Eastern Sierra, CA Backcountry Report: Mini-Spine & Tight-Choke Fun On Mt. Dana & Ellery Bowl | Tioga Pass

Report from June 19th, 2019 Brought to you by Scott Sports Skis Used:  Scott Super Guide 105 Yesterday morning Greggy, Aaron Fox, & I headed back to Tioga Pass, CA for more horribly fun skiing and hiking. Tioga Pass is still closed at the pass from the east but Cal Trans is doing a weird semi-opening starting tomorrow… Yosemite National Park, CA […]

Tioga Pass, CA Conditions Report:

Yesterday I drove over 9,945′ Tioga Pass with plans to ski Ellery Bowl just on the East side of the pass. I was hoping for snow down to the parking area like last Spring, but was severely disappointed. Looking up from the bottom revealed no snow at all on the lower half of Ellery Bowl. It looks like neither Chute Out nor Banana Chute go right now. Even the corniced bowl of Ellery Bowl doesn’t exactly look like it goes from the top. False White looks as bony as it gets. Maybe skiable if you’re into dodging rock constantly. The Power Plant Chutes are in, but there would be a lot of rock walking to access them. I couldn’t quite see into the Third Pillar but it […]

Tioga Pass Scouting Report: Ellery Bowl Chutes | + Rainbow Pools Report:

I drove over Tioga Pass today around 12:30pm. I didn’t have time to ski but did have time to stop and scope out Ellery Bowl. Things are melting fast on Tioga and you can only fully ski down right now on the far skiers left at the bottom. I skied Chute Out last Friday and it was still good but you can’t ski the very upper section now. It’s all rocks. Poop […]

One Day in CA: Surf → Water Ski → Cliff Jump → Ski → Ice Cream → Hot Springs

California. It’s simply an amazing place. Today, it showed off what it can really do. I was up early and got into the water at Ocean Beach, San Francisco by 7am. The waves were terrible, it was windy and cold. I got a few “fun” rides and called it good after about an hour. Size was in the 2-4 foot range. From the beach to the Stockton Delta. Met up with […]

Chuting Tioga Pass: Mt. Dana & Ellery Bowl| by Josh Daiek

After what seemed to be a really short and dismal ski season, I found myself feeling a little empty and dissatisfied. As ski areas across the Sierra’s wrapped up winter operations, most people threw in the towel and called it quits, but I’m not ready to quit and surely not ready for summer! With a thin snow pack and temps already breaching the 70 degree mark, I knew time was of the essence. So I threw on my skins and spent a week ski touring classic lines in the Tahoe backcountry. It was fun, but I needed something more, something different, something new, something adventurous! After discussing various options with buddy, Cody Townsend […]

Tioga Pass Report Today: 12″ of New Snow in Ellery Chutes, Ice Cream, Half Dome, Hot Springs

I left Waterford, CA this morning at 7:30am headed for Sonora Pass. At the highway 108/120 split, the sign said Sonora Pass closed, Tioga Pass open. Change of plans. I drove up highway 120 to Yosemite, stopped to jump into Rainbow Pools, took pictures of Half Dome, stopped to take pictures of a guy who’d driven out onto Toulomne Meadows and gotten stuck, asked the Park Rangerette on Tioga Pass how much snow they’d gotten, she said 8-12 inches since May 6th, then arrived at Ellery Lake on Tioga Pass at about 11am. […]

Tioga Pass, CA Report: Chuting Ellery Bowl in Pow on May 7th

It’s May 6, 2014 and it’s dumping big fat wet flakes in June Lake, Ca. Is it accumulating? No. But at only 7,800 ft, that’s not surprising in spring. It has to be sticking above 10,000 ft. Right? Right?! After a meager — but fun — winter every little scrap garners excitement, at least in me. Most sane people around these parts are climbing in the Gorge or Yosemite or the Happy’s. But there are definitely a few of us diehards out there. You know who you are, all 20 of you. I’m sure you were out there, somewhere, on this same day. If we ever meet, I’ll buy you a drink. […]

Tioga Pass Report: Ellery Chute & General Scouting | May 2nd

We got a late start yesterday with a large crew and headed up to 9,945′ Tioga Pass from Mammoth, CA. We went straight to Ellery Bowl above Ellery Lake near the top of Tioga Pass. We spotted a chute that went through and had a very tight choke near the top. It looked doable and fun so we went for it. We skinned straight up Ellery Bowl to the Dana Plateau, scouted Mt. Dana’s Solistice Couloir and Dana Couloir for future use, then skinned […]
