The Sierra Avalanche Center | Your Source for Local Avalanche Education & Forecasting

Getting up at 4 am, putting on strange plastic footwear, and hiking uphill through a blinding snowstorm might not be everyone’s idea of a good time. However, for thousands of people around the Lake Tahoe and Truckee area, this is, quite literally, the best way to spend a Saturday morning. It’s a well-known truism that more snow equals more fun. […]

The Chimney at Squaw Opened Yesterday: Photos & Videos

SnowBrains co-founder Eric Bryant. photo: robb gaffneyThe Andy Hays. photo: robb gaffney

The legendary Chimney at Squaw Valley, USA opened for the first and likely the last time of the season yesterday. Not many were on hand to hit it, but those who where there to witness it, got a helluva show. The cornice drop in was sizable, the ramp was damn fast and the air out was certainly larger than normal. Scott Gaffney dropped first and blew up upon impact. The rest of the boys all stomped the Chimney Sweep landing and […]

Squaw Valley Conditions: Bluebird Pow!

After 2 storms in one week that dropped 20″ of cold snow, it felt like a mid-winter Saturday at Squaw Valley today. The crowds came out strong, but people seemed to be in good spirits with the great snow conditions and weather. Siberia and Emigrant were basically doing double duty with Siberia giving access to Headwall via Reverse Traverse and Emigrant giving access to Granite off the backside. Reverse Traverse got us some great snow on North Bowl, Hogsback and Headwall […]

Squaw/Alpine Conditions Report: Just Hanging In There…

Yesterday at Squaw Valley was rough. Cold, windy, bumpy, not much groomed, hard, and very little snow. I’d skied Squaw 3 days earlier and it’s amazing how much snow we lost in those three days. The park was holding up well, though. I saw Tanner Hall (at least I think it was him) throwing front flips and 720’s like they were nothing. Shirely lake was skiing OK and Siberia was pretty brutal. I wasn’t brave enough to try Granite Chief. Mountain Run is now melted out and closed so we’re downloading the rest of the season. […]

Tales of Squaw Valley: The 1978 Tram Accident

The tram at squaw valley in 1978 after a cable nearly ripped it in half

Maybe you’ve heard of the ’78 tram accident, maybe you were there, or maybe you want to find out more. On the 12th of April the Squaw Valley Property Owners’ Association will be hosting an informal talk about the incident with first hand accounts told by those who were trapped and rescued. For those who don’t know, the tram was nearly ripped in 1978 at Squaw Valley. A large gust of wind sent a massive cable crashing through the cable car, injuring many and leaving 4 dead. Passengers were trapped in both cars.

Squaw Conditions Report: Spring Marches On

As spring drags on (month 3 I think) the skiing at Squaw continues to be good despite the high temperatures and severe lack of snow. Friday at Squaw offered firm and fast groomers in the morning, and soft corn and mank in the afternoon. The high temperatures this weekend will make getting out early the call, corduroy in the morning, corn in the afternoon, and beers before 4. […]

Still Wintery: Squaw Valley Video Conditions Update

Dropping into Extra Chute @ Squaw Valley

Despite falling right back into sunshine and relatively high temperatures at Squaw, the conditions are still really fun. The north facing snow is still wintery, with pockets of powder to be found throughout the mountain. All the hikes were also open yesterday, with some of the best turns of the day hiding out in plain site below the Chimney.[…]

Tahoe Storm Delivers, 2+ Feet of SNOW for Squaw! Photo Tour:

For the first time this year, Tahoe caught a break and received double the amount of snow forecasted over the weekend. With easily two feet of snow on the upper mountain, the skiing as well as the vibe came alive at Squaw. Snow fell most of Saturday and Sunday brought intermittent clouds and deep snow. As to be expected, the masses were out and hungry for pow but the lines (save Granite Chief on Sunday), remained manageable. On Saturday the only things to open on the upper mountain were Siberia and Shirley (as well as the beginner terrain) […]

Febr-uly Squaw Valley Conditions Update + Photo Tour

If January in Tahoe is Junuary, then would that mean that February is Februly? So far the month has brought temperatures far above average to California (and most of the West Coast). While we did get a good bit of snow above 8,000′ a week and a half ago, we are right back in the midst of day time highs near 60, sunshine, and a rapidly diminishing snow pack. Surprisingly the skiing is still quite fun, with Sun Bowl holding some nice spring turns, corn snow off Granite Chief Peak, […]

A Hucking Good Time @ Squaw Valley: Video + Photo Update

Sean Carey givin' it in the Slot

Yesterday was quite possibly the best day of the year at Squaw Valley. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures (with a high in the mid 50s), the skiing was good everywhere at Squaw. The Slot was smooth and ripping, all of Mainline Pocket was ready to go, and Cornice II bowl had a plethora of fun mini airs. […]

Squaw Conditions Report: Soft Wintry Snow & Sun

After a weekend of high snow levels and a lot of rain, the last push from the storm that hit Tahoe came in a little bit colder, and ended with a decent amount of snow. Squaw reported a storm total of 2′, now while the jury is still out on whether that is true, one thing is for sure, the skiing at Squaw is killer right now. Monday saw the last push of the storm, and some cloudy skies with a bit of snow, Tuesday and Wednesday however went blue, and people got after it. From the Pocket to the Palisades, Tahoe skiers enjoyed wintery snow once again, and everyone was commenting on how the last three days have been the best all […]

VIDEO: JT Holmes and Travis Ganong Skiing Squaw Today

Travis Ganong at Squaw Valley Today, Feb. 10th, 2015. photo: travis ganong facebook

World Cup Champion Travis Ganong came home to an epic powder day. Watch Travis & Jt Holmes shred 2+ feet of snow. Shot 100% on GoProtoday. – Squaw Valley Squaw Valley, USA got 26″ of snow from last weekend’s storms. It didn’t end up too soft, but it ended up pretty smooth. This video tells the truth of how it skied. Looks a bit hard, but fun. This storm was definitely a step in the right direction and we’re hoping more is on the way soon. Tahoe needs the snow, California needs the water. Mt. Rose ski resort in Nevada got 45″ of snow out of this weekend’s storms at the top of the mountain. […]

Alpine Meadows Conditions – The Return of Wintery Snow!

After a very wet weekend of skiing on Saturday and Sunday, Monday and Tuesday felt like the return of wintery conditions. Two systems came through Tahoe from Friday-Monday and dropped a total of 18″ at Alpine Meadows and “26 at Squaw. Sunday was the worst day of the storm with temps in the 40s and heavy precip most of the day. By Monday, the temps dropped and we had legit snow falling from top to bottom all day. Many of the large bumps that had formed around the mountain were filled in and smoothed out by the new snow.
