The Sierra Avalanche Center | Your Source for Local Avalanche Education & Forecasting Getting up at 4 am, putting on strange plastic footwear, and hiking uphill through a blinding snowstorm might not be everyoneโs idea of a good time. However, for thousands of people around the Lake Tahoe and Truckee area, this is, quite literally, the best way to spend a Saturday morning. Itโs a well-known truism that more snow equals more fun. The Chimney at Squaw Opened Yesterday: Photos & Videos The legendary Chimney at Squaw Valley, USA opened for the first and likely the last time of the season yesterday. Not many were on hand to hit it, but those who where there to witness it, got a helluva show. The cornice drop in was sizable, the ramp was damn fast and the air out was certainly larger than normal. Scott Gaffney dropped first and blew up upon impact. The rest of the boys all stomped the Chimney Sweep landing and […] Conditions Report Aaron Rice | April 10, 2015 5 Comments
Squaw Valley Conditions: Bluebird Pow! After 2 storms in one week that dropped 20″ of cold snow, it felt like a mid-winter Saturday at Squaw Valley today. The crowds came out strong, but people seemed to be in good spirits with the great snow conditions and weather. Siberia and Emigrant were basically doing double duty with Siberia giving access to Headwall via Reverse Traverse and Emigrant giving access to Granite off the backside. Reverse Traverse got us some great snow on North Bowl, Hogsback and Headwall […] Conditions Report Guy LaDouche | April 8, 2015 6 Comments
Squaw/Alpine Conditions Report: Just Hanging In There… Yesterday at Squaw Valley was rough. Cold, windy, bumpy, not much groomed, hard, and very little snow. I’d skied Squaw 3 days earlier and it’s amazing how much snow we lost in those three days. The park was holding up well, though. I saw Tanner Hall (at least I think it was him) throwing front flips and 720’s like they were nothing. Shirely lake was skiing OK and Siberia was pretty brutal. I wasn’t brave enough to try Granite Chief. Mountain Run is now melted out and closed so we’re downloading the rest of the season. […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | April 2, 2015 3 Comments

Tales of Squaw Valley: The 1978 Tram Accident Maybe you’ve heard of the ’78 tram accident, maybe you were there, or maybe you want to find out more. On the 12th of April the Squaw Valley Property Owners’ Association will be hosting an informal talk about the incident with first hand accounts told by those who were trapped and rescued. For those who don’t know, the tram was nearly ripped in 1978 at Squaw Valley. A large gust of wind sent a massive cable crashing through the cable car, injuring many and leaving 4 dead. Passengers were trapped in both cars. SnowBrains | March 19, 2015 22 Comments
Squaw Conditions Report: Spring Marches On As spring drags on (month 3 I think) the skiing at Squaw continues to be good despite the high temperatures and severe lack of snow. Friday at Squaw offered firm and fast groomers in the morning, and soft corn and mank in the afternoon. The high temperatures this weekend will make getting out early the call, corduroy in the morning, corn in the afternoon, and beers before 4.
