Tahoe Backcountry Breakdown: Powder and Ice and Corn, Oh My Only one word can describe how the skiing has been in the Tahoe backcountry the past few weeks: variable. Depending what aspects you decide to check out, you can expect to find recycled powder, corn, corny chowder, firm crusts, and wind blown chalk. Given the fact that itโs been a few solid weeks since the last real storm, the skiing is damn fine if you know what youโre looking […] Conditions Report Keegan Kliman | January 11, 2015 1 Comment

If you’re going to travel at dangerous speeds, you’d want to be in some kind of vehicle or at least on sled you could bail off of. Alas, neither is true. Once again, skiers win. Johan Clarey of France once skied at 101mph in a World Cup race. Whoa. A downhill skier vs. a bobsled? A comically dressed curler vs. a brawny hockey player? Sure, each sport is dierent โ some more graceful, others more death defying, […] SnowBrains | February 17, 2014 0 Comments
Mt. Bachelor, OR Conditions Report: January 2nd – 5th It was one icy weekend at Mt. Bachelor, OR. Conditions haven’t changed much since my icy arrival last Wednesday despite the brief hope for a couple new inches Thursday night. Friday was enjoyable, much like Thursday because the snow on the groomed runs was sugary, soft, and fast. Friday was also much colder with a high around 26 degrees Fahrenheit. This kept the snow from softening up in the afternoon and the groomers stayed […] Conditions Report Bevan Waite | January 7, 2014 1 Comment

NASA: Pollution, Not Rising Temperatures, May Have Melted Alpine Glaciers NASAโs Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently finished a study that shows that Europeโs glaciers may have begun their rapid melting in the 1860s due to soot from the industrial revolution. ย Itโs thought by NASA that this soot absorbed sunlight and greatly accelerated the melting of Europeโs glacier system. “If you look back through the 1600s and 1700s, the glaciers were big […] Brains SnowBrains | September 4, 2013 2 Comments
