Over 150 Dogs Compete in 47th Annual ‘Dog Derby’ at New Zealand Ski Area

Ski areas don’t just have to be for skiing—they can host dog races, too. On Saturday, 150-plus dogs and their humans showed up at Coronet Peak Ski Area in New Zealand to compete in the resort’s 47th annual Meadow Fresh Dog Derby. Before the derby started, participants were given a safety briefing. The dogs and their owners then loaded the […]

New Zealand’s Southern Alps Glaciers Under Threat

New Zealand

The Southern Alps are the backbone of the South Island of New Zealand and run almost the entire length of the island. They contain the highest peaks in all of Australia/New Zealand, including Aoraki/Mount Cook, the tallest peak at 12,218 ft. In the 1970s, a study concluded over 3,000 glaciers over 1 hectare existed within the range, but that number […]

Future Airport Proposed for New Zealand’s South Island

New Zeland

New Zealand currently has four major international airports – Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown – but soon could add a fifth. The owners of the Christchurch airport recently proposed a new airport near the South Island town of Tarras. Tarras is a small farming community about 20 miles from Wanaka, the gateway to several South Island ski areas such as […]

New Zealand Winter Outlook: High Stoke, Low Profit

New Zealand

With winter in the Southern Hemisphere just kicking off, New Zealand ski area operators have mixed thoughts on the season ahead. New Zealand implemented one of the most comprehensive quarantines in the world when the COVID-19 pandemic first began. As a result of those drastic measures, the New Zealand government has given ski areas the green light to open for […]

One Quintessential Day @ Cardrona, New Zealand – 2018

Cardrona New Zealand

In mid-August 2018, a family from California descended upon a lovely ski field on the South Island of New Zealand. Cardrona, in a nutshell, is a ski resort with impeccable views, cruising piste runs, mammoth terrain parks, steeps, open bowls and so, quite literally, terrain for the entire family.

Trip Report: Tukino, New Zealand – Homemade Lifts and Epic Terrain!

Tukino, New Zealand was a breath of fresh air. On a mountain where waiting an hour for a lift isn’t unheard of, it seems surreal that just around the corner is this grassroots ski area without any of the crowds or frills found at the more popular commercial resorts nearby. Upon our arrival, the General Manager, Phil informed us that […]

Riding Around the Range @ Remarkables, New Zealand

New Zealand, remarkable,

Back in Mid-August of 2016, a father and son team descended upon a Southern Hemisphere gem…The Remarkables ski field near Queenstown, New Zealand. Located on the southern part of the South Island, the Remarkables is a mini mountain range by its own right. Running in a true North to South fashion and separated by the rest of the Southern Alps, not only does it have impeccable scenery but it also holds some absolutely radical terrain.

Reminiscing the Radness @ Cardrona – New Zealand

During a visit in mid-August of 2016, a father and son team had the opportunity to explore the fine terrain at Cardrona ski field. Even with pesky clouds blocking out the sun for the first half of the day, this team was able to enjoy wintery snow in varied terrain.

Ridiculously Remarkable @ The Remarkables (New Zealand part I)

Toward the end of August 2015, a father & son team made the easy journey (if you ride a plane that is) from San Francisco to the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Our plan was to ski the first 4 days between Coronet Peak and The Remarkables and to introduce my son not only to NZ skiing but also to my good ol’ kiwi mates. As with any ski trip, all you can do is hope and pray that the planets will align to provide epic skiing conditions. Luckily, for my son’s first visit, the snow gods granted us superb weather and skiing around the Queenstown area.

Entertaining the Variable @ Cardrona Ski Field, New Zealand

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure to visit Cardrona Ski Field for a few days. Cardrona caters to everyone and really does ‘love you.’ From families to park skiers, off piste warriors to sidecountry enthusiasts, they really have a lot to offer. Speaking of the terrain parks, now that Snow Park NZ has shutdown, Cardrona is now THE place to visit during the North American Summer for park skiing With my skiing partner Miles Holden, we couldn’t have had two more different days on this trip. The first day was shut down early for insane weather, and the second day was a mix of every type of light, snow condition and terrain[…]

Saturday Session of Succulence @ Harris Mountains Heli-ski NZ – September 14th, 2013

What the best way to spend your last day on a ski vacation? Heli-skiing is crucial to experience the Southern Alps of New Zealand for snow enthusiasts. Access to the interior of the Southern Alps is extremely tough due to their massive stature without any gradual elevation gain from the plains. This is why most of the ski fields are located on the exterior of the range…it is just too difficult to throw in a road and build a resort. Higher elevation, steeper slopes, better snow, longer descents, and incredible vistas are what you […]

Chuting for Kiwi Spring Slayage @ The Remarkables, NZ September 8th – 12th, 2013

Oh September…the perfect time to sleep on a plane and wake up in New Zealand! Its hard not to love the South Island of New Zealand. Good coffee, friendly people, crystal clear lakes, stunning vistas and of course, the Remarkables. You see, not only does this ski field cater to families but it has some seriously addicting ‘hike to’ terrain […]
