Wet Dreams in the Hida Mountains: Tateyama Dreams Turned Nightmares

A lot inspired the namesake of this saga. Constantly dreaming about getting to ski these towering mountains played a factor, however it wasn’t until a deluge of rain for two consecutive weeks that the literal sense of being in a wet dream set in. Like most wet dreams, things got weird. When not used to the confines and time constraints that come with what most consider normality, there’s only so much down time one can tolerate before feeling a little unbalanced. Thankfully, before the Gary Busey level of sanity set in, the promise of fair weather returned. […]

How Bad is the California Drought? Possibly the worst in over 1,000 years…

As just about everyone knows by this point, the West is within the grips of a severe drought, California in particular. However, California has had a long history of drought and water issues, so really how serious is this drought that has seen the first ever mandatory water restrictions […]

Blackcomb, B.C. to Close One Month Early + Whistler Powder Report:

zack carve

This past week has been a mash of snow, rain, freezing levels rising and falling, and clouds. Up high on the mountain has been the place to be for the entire season and that is still true today. Sunday was by far the best snow day we have had in a while. There was over 30 cm of fresh that day with lower freezing levels. It was snowing in the parking lots for some parts of the day which has not occurred in a hot second. It was socked in all day so people were sticking to the trees and up high near rocks for visibility.

Over the night rain continued […]

Squaw Conditions Report: Skiing in the Rain

Over the last few days Tahoe finally received some precipitation as the “Atmospheric River” slammed into California. As Storm Super Soaker 15′ hit Tahoe on Friday, it began with high winds, power outages, and rock slides, followed by rain, lots and lots of rain. Friday night did see snow up high with Squaw reporting 15″, unfortunately however it got warm and started raining again, not before […]

Alyeska, AK Conditions Report:

I feel like I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but really it’s just a recurring cycle of non-stop rain. It’s getting old, and the morale of the locals is far from high. This is the first week, it seems, that people are finally losing their minds. The smart ones have left to Japan, Jackson Hole or booked a trip to Mexico. The ones still holding high hope for winter to return in AK are now beginning to have their doubts, while others are hitting the bottle harder than ever. Though it sounds rough, there is still fun to be had on the resort. You just have to dig a little deeper, find that inner child, and pretend it’s April.

NOAA Satellite Imagery: California = The Golden-BROWN State…

The historic California drought is now 3 years old and the numbers are starting to add up. It’s not looking good for California. “Eleven of the past fifteen years have been drier than normal, with the past three years delivering about 45 percent of normal rain and snowpack in Southern California. This follows two of the wettest decades in California’s history—the 1980s and 1990s […]

Waiting for the Rain in California…

Waiting for the rain to come. In the wintertime there are fewer things I loath than the sound of an ice cold rain pounding down on the roof. Yet come summertime there is nothing that my ears long for more than the gentle pattering on the tin, turning to a more audible soaking roar. […]

California Drought Predicted 10 Years Ago

California is currently in the middle of the worst drought in the past 165 years. University of California professor Lisa Sloan used computer models to predict the current drought conditions in 2004. Sloan’s models were general, and predicted the specific conditions driving the current California drought. The model showed that a decrease in arctic sea ice would lead to atmospheric blocking off the coast of California. This modeled atmospheric blocking comes in the form of a high pressure zone. This year that is exactly what was observed. With a decrease in Arctic sea ice, the heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere increases […]

California May Have Hit Its Driest Point In 500 Years

We all know that California is hurting this year. No rain, no snow, big fires, and a simply bizarre winter. If you can call it winter. Record highs have littered the state with Sacramento hitting 70 degrees three straight days in January. The Huffington Post got a bit swarmy with there whole “Direst in 500 Years” thing, but lets here them out. Here are a few […]

NOAA: Atmospheric River Headed to Lake Tahoe This Week

california atmospheric river storm

NOAA released a video today showing an atmospheric river headed to Tahoe. This is the kind of setup that gives Tahoe large amounts of precipitation. The only problem with the coming atmospheric river is that it will have very high snow levels. NOAA’s confidence in 1-2 feet of snow above 8,000 feet is high. NOAA’s confidence in snow below 8,000 feet is low… […]

Little Cottonwood Canyon CLOSED | Rock and Mud Slides Cross Road | Photo Gallery

The last two months in Northern Utah have been unusually dry leading to scarey fire conditions as the 4th of July approached.  Fortunately the fire and brimstone some expected did not happen after a week of triple digit temps.  However in the last 2 days we have nearly made up for 2 months of dry weather in 2 short lived, […]
