Sonora Pass, CA is CLOSED Due to Snow Today

Yep, 9,643-foot Sonora Pass in California is closed today due to snow on the road. A storm came through last night that was forecast to drop up to 6″ of new snow in the southern sierra but we didn’t realize it would snow so much this far north. Winter is coming! “SR108 Sonora Pass is CLOSED as of 02:30AM Sunday, October 4th 2015, Due to Snow. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route and please be prepared for (early) Winter Driving Conditions.” – Ca lTrans

Tioga Pass REOPENS | Sonora Pass CLOSED

9,943-foot Tioga Pass and 9,624-foot Sonora Pass closed last week on May 14th due to a snowstorm that came through the area and dropped up to a foot of snow on the roadways. This was the 2nd time these passes have closed due to snowstorms since their record early opening on April 17th, 2015. The weather has cleared up since May 14th allowing for Tioga Pass to open yesterday. Tioga Pass & Sonora Pass, CA CLOSE Today Due to Snowstorm

9,943′ Tioga Pass & 9,624′ Sonora Pass in California have both closed today for the second time since they officially opened for the summer on April 17th. That April 17th opening of the two passes was one of the earliest pass openings in history due to this being the lowest snowfall winter on record. Somewhere around 1-2 feet of snow fell on both 9,945′ Tioga and 9,624′ Sonora passes and they’re both still experiencing snowfall today.
