Swell Saturday: Deep Barrel to 20-Foot Alley Oop!

Jordy Smith huge alley oop

Jordy Smith is a pro surfer from South Africa who surfs on the World Surfing League. On a down day last week, Jordy went yard on a wave in Australia called North Point. He gets a ridiculously deep barrel, then bottom turns out of the wave and fing launches himself into outer space. Jordy travels about 20-feet through the air doing an Alley-Oop before landing perfecting back on the wave and surfing on. Unreal. What’s even cooler is that Jordy is a big dude. He’s 6’3″, 190 pounds and can surf and fly like that.

Pro Surfer Ricardo dos Santos Shot to Death by Off-Duty Cop

The surfing community unites in mourning the tragic loss of Brazilian surfer Ricardo dos Santos, who was shot outside of his home on Monday. Amongst conflicting reports, it appears that dos Santos, 24, was killed by an off-duty police officer at 8:40 am. One witness says dos Santos asked the officer and his brother to leave the beach outside his home, after spotting them using drugs and playing loud music. The older of the two is reported to be the off-duty cop, and […]

Historic Swell Rocks Southern California | Photo Tour:

The beach cities of southern California are not without crowds during warmer months, however the locals still maintain a small town mentality especially when there is a swell. Immediately walking into the iconic Sugar shack Breakfast joint where many employees are top level surfers you overhear surfers trading shifts, joking about finally getting powerful waves locally. One can only imagine when word of possible super storm […]

Bali, Indonesia Surf & Culture Report: Enormous Waves, Dengue Fever, Kecak Dance

The traditional healer that gave me the cupping therapy the other week helped for a bit, but not long. I ended up going back to Bali from Java and going to the doctor after 5 nights of fever. Yep, I got Dengue Fever. You get Dengue Fever from mosquitos and I don’t recommend it. In Bali, the waves were enormous. I mean huge. I went to Uluwatu and it was cranking. I actually thought I was going to paddle out until I walked down to the […]

What’s It Like to Get Barreled for 45-Seconds? | It’s Like This:

Getting barreled for 2 seconds is rad. Getting barreled for 5 seconds is unreal. Getting barreled for 10 seconds is almost unheard of. This guy, Benji Brand, gets barreled for 45-seconds in this clip from Namibia, Africa. The first clip in the shot is in super slow motion. The second clip, starting at 2:48 is in real time. Both are great to watch. We love […]

Swell Saturdays: The Heaviest Toy Wave on Earth | Teahupoo, Tahiti

Teahupoo in Tahiti is the heaviest barrel on Earth. It’s named in Tahitian translates to “severed head” or “place of skulls”. Yeah… The place is so burly that it’s fun to make light of it. Fun to create a world where Teahupoo hurts no one but the stoked remains the same. Or almost the same. […]

Conditions Report: Santa Cruz, CA New Years Eve @ Steamer’s Lane

Steamer’s Lane is one of the most famous places to surf in Santa Cruz. It is often where the Cold Water Classics comp goes down and is where a lot of surfing history has been made in Santa Cruz. It has gnarly waves, when it’s good, and is in a stunning setting right by the light house that looks over the Santa Cruz bay and the Beach Boardwalk. Tuesday evening (New Years eve) was gnarly. The waves were BIG, the swell was consistent, the tide […]
