Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Tussock Ski Season

Spring skiing is at it’s finest right now at Treble Cone. Snow is softening usually by about 10.30 – 11.00 in the morning and remains in good shape all day. Conditions are especially good for Tussock skiing! For those unfamiliar with tussock is it a native New Zealand grass that grows in larger clumps in the high alpine. For those looking for an adventure it’s awesome fun to ski and/or jump over (and won’t damage your skis).

Treble Cone, NZ Season Review: One of the Best Seasons in 10 Yrs

This year has been one of the best in the last 10 years with the snow being good and mostly stable through out the winter. It’s provided some great opportunities for some to get out into the backcountry and I’m sure the ski touring will continue all through out spring. The growing number of those prepared to work for the solitude and untracked lines of the backcounrty is awesome. I’m not bagging the ski field experience, especially that of Treble Cone, just stoked for those riders pushing the boundaries and showing that adventurous spirit.

Treble Cone, New Zealand Report – Wintery Snow!

We arrived at Treble Cone nice and early to a beautiful blue sky and low winds. The latest snow fell 2 days before we got there, but cold temps kept the snow nice and wintery all over the mountain. The summit was still holding some heavy pow […]

VIDEO: Guy Throws Huge Backflip – Almost Lands on Rock – @ Treble Cone, NZ

big backflip ski treble cone new zealand

Damn, that landing was really really close to a large rock. If this guy had landed 3 feet to the left, he’d likely have gotten extremely injured. Scary… But, he didn’t land on the rock and landed in nothing but pure powder and skied away. Gosh, but we can’t stop thinking about that rock. Especially since this landing required a bit of a backslap to get things back in control. Imagine backslapping that […]

Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Genuine Powder

Athlete Marian Krogh skiing fresh snow in the Saddle Basin

The snow at Treble Cone has been off the charts lately. It’s snowed about 10cm every day for the last week but visibility remained poor until Saturday when the clouds parted and it was a glorious bluebird. The snow has been incredibly light and fluffy – genuine powder which is unusual for New Zealand. All terrain is open at Treble Cone including many areas that didn’t open at all last season. The best skiing on the mountain is […]

Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: 17-Inch Powder Day

With 40 cm of new snow in 24 hours and over 1.5 meters over the past week we headed to Treble Cone to find some pow. You could see the snow line was much lower today and it was quite cold. The first obstacle of the day was the chain requirement from the bottom of the dirt road for all 2wd vehicles including our JUCY Box. The views from the access road were even more spectacular today: a deep blue sky, bright sun and a bit of fog mixed in. Treble Cone has only 2 chair lifts and one feeds the other. Obstacle number 2: a long line. Don’t people work anymore? It took about 25 minutes to get on the 6-pack chair. The goal was to get over to […]

Treble Cone, NZ Conditions Report: Rain, Lightning, Sketchy Pow, & Korean Food

It rained since we arrived in Wanaka on Tuesday and we patiently waited for the wind and lightning to stop by eating at the local Korean restaurant and fishing in the nearby rivers and making a day trip to Queenstown about an 1 hour west. Finally, the weather turned and Treble Cone reopened on Sunday and a huge crowd showed up. Only the lower mountain was open in the morning, as they were de-icing and prepping the Saddle Basin chair and terrain. There are so many obstacles and the coverage is so thin that we saw 2 ski patroller sleds come down with injured people BEFORE 10 am […]
