Shreddin’ the Coral @ Kirkwood – still fun to be had! With 3mm of new snow under bluebird skies, it was one of those days skiers from California could only dream of at Kirkwood. So the MLK weekend monster storm is gone. Do you go skiing or do you stay home and purchase yet another DLC on Forza? […] Conditions Report Casey Cane | January 14, 2015 2 Comments
Search and Ye Shall Receive @ Kirkwood For the fourth year in a row, the snowpack in Tahoe is lackluster for this time of year. Thankfully, Kirkwood received just enough snow to open 100% of their mountain from the storms to date. Unfortunately, we received some mixed precipitation and heavy Eastern winds […] Conditions Report Casey Cane | January 8, 2015 4 Comments
All Time Alaskan Tree Skiing New Year’s finally provided some much needed snow in Turnagain Pass, AK. Although the winds were fierce and any snow above treeline was becoming wind scoured, the trees were finally filling in. The snow was dense, soft and fast. Despite receiving over 24 inches in the upper elevations, it was skiing about three inches. The wind had completely buffed the snow over and made for some all time tree skiing. It felt great to finally play around in the trees again! There’s no shortage of fun features from pillows, to multiple staged drops to air off of and keep you on your toes! Currently, it’s been cold for about a week without precipitation. Much […] Featured Video Scott Rich | January 7, 2015 0 Comments
Cultivating the Cornice Chair @ Kirkwood – one awesome chairlift! I have a special place in my heart for a chairlift better known as Chair 6 aka ‘Cornice’ at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Why you may ask? Well, for starters, the lift starts at the base and tops out on a ridge line full of cornices (hence the name.)[…] Conditions Report Casey Cane | December 25, 2014 2 Comments
Slashin’ into the 75th Season @ Sugar Bowl – 12/06/14 The time is finally hereโฆoff-trail skiing and celebrating the opening day for Sugar Bowlโs 75th season. Opening day access was through the village via the awesome old school gondola. However, the meat of the skiing was on Mt. Lincoln. With light rain and a thick cloud layer it definitely was not the most ideal day in the weather department but fun prevailed. The terrain included anything from the Rahlveโs Run to Lake View for about halfway down the chair, and at that point, the groomer was the call as the off-trail snow was a wee bit sticky. The top half of Mt. Lincoln was smooth and fast yielding[…] Conditions Report Casey Cane | December 9, 2014 0 Comments
Squaw to Remove 5,000 Trees from Red Dog Area = New Lines & Better Skiing: Squaw Valley will be cutting down and removing over 5,000 trees in the Red Dog area this fall. The trees targeted for removal will be dead and dying trees off Red Dog Ridge near Heidi’s Rock. Squaw is saying this will open up 100 acres of quality tree-skiing terrain. We know, we know, removing trees isn’t generally a cool thing in California, but these trees are dead and this tree removal will be great for opening up the skiing off Red Dog Ridge. After these trees are pulled out, there will be space to charge hard in the Red Dog zone. There is no question, Red Dog holds the best tree skiing […] Industry News SnowBrains | October 23, 2014 6 Comments
Candide Thovex Skiing Dangerously Through Trees We all know that Candide is amazing in park, amazing on the big mountain, amazing at ski resorts, and now we have videographic evidence that he’s amazing in trees. We suspect that some/most of these shots are sped up. Nevertheless, Candide can mob through trees. It’s fun to watch how hard Candide charges in marginal conditions. I think this season we can all take a tip from his style. Even if it’s not great out, you can […] SnowBrains | December 23, 2013 2 Comments
