The U.S. economy is in a state of flux. Worker shortages, historically high inflation, and social unrest are changing the dynamics of how people act and feel.

The last couple of years has created greater mobility for work options, as well as a refocus on quality of life. Many Americans had to take a long hard look at what their priorities were and where they wanted to live.

Methodology

Many people have chosen to migrate to a state that fits their lifestyle better. But how do they choose where to go? CNBC rated the states that are the worst places to live in 2022. The metrics for their ranking are called the Life, Health, and Inclusion (LHI) score and include:

  • Crime rates
  • Environmental quality
  • Health care
  • Availability of childcare
  • Inclusiveness of state laws

We are confused as to why “availability of skiable terrain” wasn’t included in their rankings, but we did notice that there is a correlation. A snow grade has been added to each state based on how many resorts and skiable acres it has.

#9 Tennessee

LHI SCore: 108 out of 325 points. Snow Grade: F. 1 Resort, 38 acres
