As spring weather brings more outdoor enthusiasts to the White Mountains, New Hampshire, the U.S. Forest Service has announced the closure of a section of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail due to dangerous conditions.
The closure extends from Lunch Rocks to the top of the Headwall, where the trail meets the Alpine Garden Trail. This annual closure is necessary due to the area’s magnitude of crevasses and undermining and the severe consequences of a fall.
“Greetings spring skiers and hikers!” the Forest Service said in a statement. “A section of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail through The Lip Area is now CLOSED to all use.”
The Forest Service advises hikers to use the Lion Head Trail as an alternative route.
The closure is in effect under 36 CFR 261.55(a), which grants the Forest Service the authority to restrict access to certain areas for public safety reasons.ย The closure will remain in effect until snow melt-out eliminates these specific hazards.
Tuckerman Ravine is a popular destination for spring skiing and hiking, but the area is known for its challenging and potentially hazardous terrain. The closure is necessary to protect outdoor enthusiasts’ safety during this time of year.
Hikers and skiers are urged to heed the closure and plan their routes accordingly. Up-to-date information on trail conditions and closures can be found on the U.S. Forest Service’s website.
