Coming in 2022, the United States Mint will start producing a limited edition one-dollar coin highlighting the impact of Vermont on the sport of snowboarding. The coin is a part of the “American Innovation” series of one-dollar coins, which will eventually highlight innovations from all 50 states plus Washington DC. The coin, designed by artist Justin Kunz, was designed specifically to “capture a sense of the energy and exuberance of snowboarding through movement implied by diagonal lines and curved shapes” according to the US Mint.

While snowboarding wasn’t invented in the Green Mountain State, many of the sports innovations can be traced back to Vermont. One of the most prolific snowboard manufacturers, Burton Snowboards, is headquartered in Burlington, Vermont. Burton along with others helped to create improved foot bindings and innovative snowboard technology pushing the sport forward.

Vermont Governor, Phil Scott, noted that “in many ways, Vermont is the birthplace of modern snowboarding, and this coin represents Vermont’s contributions to the sport.” According to the US Mint, the specialty coin and others from Rhode Island, Kentucky, and Tennessee will be available for direct order starting in 2022.
