Report from April 21, 2024
On Sunday, we were on the hunt for soft snow.
It hasn’t snowed up here since April 12th.
That April 12 storm dropped about 30″ of snow in the range and since then that new snow has been slammed by wind, scorched by sun, and hammered by skiers.
But the Chugach Magic has been in play…
Cold calm night lead to recrystallization (near surface faceting) of the snow surface leading to delicious “Alaskan Velvet”.
Our lead guide Even sniffed somehow sniffed out good snow in the Prospector zone.
We had a small blue hole to work with and our pilot was nervous of the impending cloud bank.
We operated quickly and cleanly busting out 2 runs of stellar AK Velvet in the prospector zone before getting chased outta the range by clouds and hitting an excellent mellow spine zone on our way home.
Too damn fun.
This mountain range blows my mind every time I enter it.
Thanks, Alaska!
