1 Turn in Alaska = Big Ride in an Avalanche | POV Video of KC Deane in Avalanche

This video is more for entertainment value than avalanche education.  We’re not sure how much it helps the general backcountry population to see POV video of what it looks like to get caught in an avalanche, but it just might help.

In reality, no matter who you are, you’ll know when you’re in an avalanche.  There are some important tips once you’re caught:

1.  If you can maintain the turn you’re in and the speed you have to try to get to a safe zone

2.  Once caught in the avalanche, fight like hell.  Fight to keep on top and keep your legs downhill.

3.  As you feel the avalanche slowing to a stop, use one arm to create an air pocket near your face.  Use your other arm to reach whatever direction you think is up (hopefully you’re right and you’re hand will be visible).

If nothing else, this video helps us keep avalanches in our brains.  Anytime we’re in the backcountry, we need to be thinking about what we can do to avoid an avalanche situation.
