Anchorage, Alaska, is currently experiencing its snowiest November since records began in 1953. The city has seen 39.1 inches of snowfall so far, with 11 days of the month still to go. The previous record was 38.8″, set in 1994.

Beginning with an early November storm, the snowfall intensified, culminating in 8.9 inches of snow on November 8. This contributed significantly to the record-breaking total,  reports the National Weather Service.

The heavy snow has significantly impacted city life. Up to 30 inches of snow have covered the roads in some areas, leading to widespread power outages and a declared snow emergency.

Despite efforts by city and state crews, road clearing has been challenging. Dangerous driving conditions have disrupted public transportation and school schedules. The Anchorage School District temporarily moved to remote learning before resuming limited in-person classes.

There is more snow forecast in the upcoming days, with temperature highs barely getting above freezing.

This is bad news for officials but great news for skiers. Alyeska Resort, 40 miles southeast of Anchorage, opens on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
