Loveland and Arapahoe Basin ski areas in Colorado started making snow this week.

A couple of days before those CO ski areas began snowmaking, Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff AZ, starting making snow at 8pm on Saturday night.

This was the earliest start to snowmaking in Arizona history and the first time ever that Arizona Snowbowl was the first ski area to make snow in the USA.

Arizona Snowbowl fired up their snow guns over the weekend – this marked the earliest start in Arizona’s history and, for the first time ever, crowned the Flagstaff ski area as the first to make snow in the United States.

Snowbowl officially began snowmaking operations on Logjam and Wild Turkey at 8 p.m. on Saturday night and continued through this morning as the resort prepares to be the first ski area open in Arizona (Opening Day is scheduled for November 10).

The race to become the first ski area in the U.S. is fueled by the resort that can make snow first. This contest is historically duked out between Colorado ski areas Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin. This year, Snowbowl beat them both.

As the resort prepares for its 80th anniversary winter season, officials announced that season passes and Power Products (multi-day discount cards) are available at the lowest guaranteed price through this Friday, September 29.

Snowbowl is currently open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for fall operations through mid-October, with scenic chairlift rides that offer views of the golden aspens and the Grand Canyon. This Friday, Snowbowl will host its final Sunset Music Series event, which features live music by the Lucky Lenny Trio, extended Scenic Chairlift hours (guests enjoy an extra hour of panoramic views – the lift closes at 5 p.m.) and a dinner with street taco flair.
