The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) has issued an avalanche warning for large parts of Colorado’s mountain ranges from Wednesday, February 7, to Friday, February 9. Avalanche warnings are in place for the Park Range and Flat Top mountains, Grand and Battlement Mesa’s, the West Elks through the Ragged and Ruby Mountains to Huntsman Ridge, as well as San Juan, La Plata, La Garita, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Heavy snow and strong winds are creating very dangerous avalanche conditions and large natural and human-triggered avalanches are very likely. The CAIC advises that travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.

For your safety and that of others, please avoid traveling into avalanche terrain in areas with high avalanche danger (Level 4) and exercise caution in areas with considerable avalanche danger (Level 3). Be aware that storms can pile soft, loose snow on top of weak, cohesionless snow. This creates high avalanche risk and the CAIC urges skiers and boarders to avoid those areas. Stay on slopes with less than a foot of new snow and lower-angle slopes. Most avalanches occur in terrain with more than 30°. Please visit the CAIC website for up to date information and the latest avalanche conditions.
