8,736′ Ebbetts Pass on Highway 4 in California provides access to some of the most incredible spring backcountry skiing and riding in North America.

Unfortunately, Ebbetts Pass is still closed while its neighboring pass, 9,624′ Sonora Pass opened yesterday.

So, why is Ebbetts Pass still closed?

“Why is Highway 4 closed?

Snow removal has been completed by Cal Trans District 10 Woodfords Yard. Thank you ALL at the Woodfords and Cabbage Patch yards!

The roadway itself suffered significant damage as a result of the severe winter. Contractor George Reed received the bid to repair SR-4. Currently the roadway has approximately 30 full and partial grind outs and a significant shoring operation. As you can see in one of the pictures mother nature is not helping Reed Construction out (fallen tree across the roadway). Reed Construction still needs to do fill and compaction work and then they will be able to pave. Looks like excellent progress thus far. Hope you enjoy the photos and update.” – CHP South Lake Tahoe, CA yesterday
