Palisades Tahoe, California, announced via its blog earlier today that the legendary KT-22 chairlift will open for the season tomorrow, Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

The resort plans to add Scott at Alpine and KT-22 at Palisades to the schedule, the blog states. A lot of work goes into prepping these two lifts, even with the help of more than two feet of recent snowfall up top. Patrol, Lift Operations, and Lift Maintenance teams worked today to set ropes, finish ramps, and work out any last-minute kinks in the chairlift. So, while you may have seen the chairs spinning today, the opening goal is Wednesday.

Lift and terrain updates and weather outlook from the resort below:

LIFT & TERRAIN UPDATES:

  • There may be limited grooming off of KT-22.
  • Our grooming and snowmaking departments continue working on Headwall, but we do not have a set opening date yet. We opened the Sun Bowl terrain for the first time today. Our Ski Patrol will continue to expand off-piste skiing where they can.
  • Granite Chief still needs more snow at the bottom. Solitude is close to being ready. Silverado is not even on the table yet.
  • We’ve seen a lot of questions about Lakeview and Sherwood. We do not have estimated openings for either of these chairlifts yet. We simply need more snow to get snowcats back there to start work on access roads and chairlift ramps.

WEATHER OUTLOOK

We are finally seeing a solid chance of snow in the forecast every day for the foreseeable future:

  • 1-3 inches by Wednesday morning
  • 7-15 inches by Thursday morning
  • Friday will probably be a clearer day.
  • Storms return on Saturday, ranging from 3 to 18 inches, depending on the elevation. There are still several days to watch this storm take shape.

KT-22 opened on December 9, 2022/23, December 21, 2021/22, December 21, 2020/21, December 11, 2019/20, and December 8, 2018/19. But in 2017/18, it didn’t open until January 27; in 2014, it was February 15.

Palisades Tahoe has seen 67” of snow this season, the second-most in California, and has a 49” base (the second deepest in the state.) There is a further two feet of snow forecast for the next week.
