The latest winter storm to hit Idaho’s West Central Mountains has delivered more than three feet of snow to the slopes of Brundage Mountain in just the last seven days. The McCall, Idaho ski resort is reporting more fresh snowfall in the last ten days than it received during the entire month of December.

THE BREAKDOWN:

  • Nine inches of new snow fell overnight at Brundage Mountain.
  • Brundage Mountain has received 36” of snow this week alone (February 28 through March 5).
  • Brundage Mountain has received measurable snowfall every day since February 25, a total of 44” in the past 10 days.
  • That 10-day total amounts to more snowfall than Brundage got during the entire month of December. December 2023 snowfall totaled 40 inches.
  • The second snowiest week of the ski season was from January 5 through January 12. Brundage accumulated 33 inches during that time period, but slope coverage at that point in the season was sparse, so powder skiers had limited off-piste terrain to enjoy. At that point, the snow base ranged from 31” to 51”.
  • Current snow depths range from 71” at the base to 98” on the upper mountain. This total is nearly identical to the measurements from the first week of March last year (2022-2023 season)

“There is no doubt that these are the best snow conditions of the season,” says Brundage Mountain spokesperson, April Whitney. “This has been a nice cold storm cycle with low temperatures and dry, fluffy snow, and all of the off-trail areas people love to explore have great coverage right now. It’s definitely prime time on the Best Snow in Idaho!”

Resort managers want to remind powder-loving skiers and snowboarders that deep snow conditions exist, so extra caution is advised off-trail, especially around evergreen trees where tree wells can develop.

“We haven’t worried a lot this season about tree well hazards or deep snow immersion, so we do want to remind people headed off trail to ski with a buddy, keep their eyes on their friends, and steer clear of those soft spots around trees.”

Cold temperatures are expected to persist through the week, which will help preserve the new snow until the next storm system rolls in. Forecasters say another foot of snow – or more – could fall between Sunday and next Wednesday.
