Mikaela Shiffrin earned a record $885,000 in prize money alone during this year’s World Cup ski season. Her 17 victories, the most ever in a season, gave her at least double the amount of the next highest earner on the women’s circuit. Petra Vlhova was second with $427,000.

Marcel Hirscher, who won a record-extending eighth straight overall World Cup title, topped the men’s list $564,000.

Shiffrin won the women’s overall title for the third straight year.

World Cup organizers typically pay 45,000 Swiss francs ($44,950) for a win. Prize money is paid down to 30th place, which usually earns $500 ($499).

Shiffrin’s record-breaking season by the numbers:

  • 70% win ratio

  • 60 career wins

  • 17 wins this season

  • 8 slalom wins

  • 4 giant slalom wins

  • 3 super-G wins

  • 2 parallel slalom wins

  • World Champion slalom and super-G; Bronze in GS

  • 4 crystal globes

  1. Much more unmentioned prize money also comes from her two big sponsors, Atomic and Barilla. She sports their logos and that brings the ski and food giants lots of publicity. That means more cash flow and that gets spread around. Also consider that all the top ski racers get showered with non cash prizes like clothing, sunglasses and the like. Literally a kings ransom of ski goodies worth who knows how much. Lets put this way. Spyder wear ain’t cheap.
