NOAA Declares “Extreme Drought” in California | January-April Precipitation Forecast is Below Average…

SnowBrains |

NOAA has declared “Extreme Drought” in California which is the highest level of drought there is.  California just experienced its driest Calendar Year in 119 years of record keeping.  California has had its driest first 4 months of any Water Year (Oct. 1st – Sept. 30th) on record.

This drought is the result of a persistent ridge of high pressure sitting over California blocking all storms from entering California.  This high pressure ridge has been blocking California since January 2013.

The rest of January 2014 is forecasted to be dry with above average temperatures.

The January – April forecast for California is for Below Average precipitation.

Sorry for all the bad news.  We’re hoping this forecast is wrong and that Tahoe experiences one of the “Miracle Marches” of yesteryear.
