The Colorado Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Parks and Wildlife has released an official Colorado trails app. Aimed at all users of trails, whether that be hikers, bikers, runners, horse riders, or motorized vehicle users, the app and its accompanying website is a comprehensive database of over 39,000-miles of public Colorado trails.

The Colorado Trail Explorer, or COTREX for short, is a free application for website and smartphone users. Users will find the database useful for navigating trails on Federal, State, local, and private lands with public access.

“The COTREX app is a marriage of Coloradans’ love of the outdoors and using the latest technology to discover more of our beautiful state,” said Alex Dean, trails and recreation project manager for the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. “We are excited for Coloradans to download the COTREX app. It’s a great tool for exploring our wide diversity of trails and encouraging more Coloradans to spend time outdoors.”

The app allows the download of maps to your device for those times in the wilderness when a cell network isn’t available. Pre-planning a route can give you the distance and an elevation profile of your next adventure., and while out on the trail you can log any interesting sights, plants or animals for example.

Find the app on your smartphone’s app store.
