The Yokoteyama ski area, part of the interconnected Shiga Kogen Mountain Resort near Nagano, Japan, has announced its official opening day. Yokoteyama will have a ‘pre-open’ for this weekend on November 18 and 19, 2023, then will shut for a couple of days before officially re-opening for the season on November 23, 2023.

Shiga Kogen is in Yamanouchi in the Joshinetsu National Park of Japan’s Northern Alps. The area offers breathtaking views and a variety of terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, from gentle beginner slopes to challenging advanced runs.

With an impressive 18 interconnected resorts, 80+ runs, and 3,215 foot (980 meters) of vertical, Shiga Kogen is the largest ski area in Japan. It is a paradise for intermediate to low-end advanced riders, offering extensive snow-covered trails that are ideal for cruising. The area is serviced by 48 lifts and four gondolas, and also offers a shuttle bus service. Shiga Kogen has a long season lasting from November to the end of May.

Beyond world-class skiing and snowboarding, the area also allows visitors to experience Japanese culture and wildlife. After a day on the slopes, you can take a trip to a nearby onsen (hot springs) for a relaxing soak in natural hot water or visit Japan’s world-famous snow monkeys.

Found 15 – 20 minutes away from the resort, Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, is the home to an onsen-soaking troop of Japanese Macaques. Renowned for bathing in the area’s hot springs, these monkeys are a fantastic photo opportunity while you are in the area.

With more snow in the forecast, skiers and snowboarders can get excited for the winter in Japan. While not as popular as Niseko or Hakuba, Shiga Kogen is growing as a destination for both domestic and international visitors. It offers an authentic Japanese skiing experience without the crowds.

Aside from skiing and snowboarding, you can enjoy plenty of other activities. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular options for those who want to explore the beautiful winter landscape. Shiga Kogen offers many indoor and outdoor amenities for those looking for a break from the slopes. The resort has numerous hot springs, restaurants, and shops to relax and refuel after a day on the hill.
