A skier died on Friday evening, February 23, at The Highlands at Harbor Springs Resort, Michigan, following an accident in expert terrain.

At about 8:42 p.m., ski patrol received a call to assist an injured skier. Upon arrival, they found a male skier with a severe head injury. Ski patrol administered first aid and CPR and the man was taken to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The accident occurred on expert-rated terrain. It is unclear at this point if other skiers or boarders were involved. However, Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin highlighted, that the male skier had not been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. This was also later confirmed by Highlands Resort Director of Communications, Erin Ernst. Ernst added that the resort “does not identify persons who are injured nor share information about injuries sustained at the resort due to concerns for patient and family confidentiality.”

The Highlands at Harbor Springs Resort is a privately owned resort in Northern Michigan, previously known as Boyne Highlands. The resort offers 54 groomed runs across 435 skiable acres and 11 miles of cross country tracks, as well as fat tire biking, snowshoeing, and a host of other activities.
