Over the last two decades, Silverton Mountain in Colorado has made its name by providing adventure seekers with dramatic big mountain terrain and a uniquely exhilarating skiing experience. The mountain sits in the heart of the San Juan Range and is renowned globally for its backcountry and helicopter access. Established in 2001 by Aaron and Jen Brill, this ski destination embraces the past while pushing away from the luxury approach to the skiing and riding experience. The destination was meant as an anti-resort escape for thrill-seekers evading the crowds of the increasingly developed ski mountains found throughout the rest of the state. Now, after years of proven success and culture building, the Brills are handing the reigns to new ownership.

Silverton Mountain announced in an Instagram post on Wednesday that it was being sold by the Brills to a Colorado-based business called Heli Adventures Inc. led by CEO Andy Culp and President Brock Strabourger. The Brills stated that they wish to exit the turbulent business of ski resort ownership and operation, and instead focus their time enjoying the sport and spending time with their family. In a sit down with the local newspaper, the Silverton Standard, Aaron Brill said, “It’s been an honor and a pleasure building Silverton Mountain from the ground up. …Every day is a challenge and that’s why we love the ski industry!”

If you’re worried about big changes coming, don’t. In the announcement of the sale, Aaron ensured readers and followers that the mountain would be in good hands and that the existing team would remain in place.

The town of Silverton was originally established in 1874 as a mining colony. When the railroads reached the area in 1882, a boom began for the next three decades. The town grew and so did its reputation in the state. Generations later, as the mining industry faded, the idea of revitalizing the area through outdoor adventure emerged. In the late 90s, the Brills envisioned a ski experience that harkened back to the sport’s early days while incorporating modern amenities. Once the area was purchased, plans for an experts-only skiing experience were set in motion and Silverton Mountain as we know it exists today.

Silverton’s distinguishing feature is its untamed and dangerous terrain. Unlike conventional resorts, it doesn’t groom slopes or perform avalanche control, making it a haven for advanced and expert skiers seeking the thrill of untouched powder. With only one chairlift to the summit and 26,819 acres of skiable terrain, adventurers from all over the globe flock to this mountain every year for boasting rights on their bucket lists. Guided skiing is a popular choice for most. Silverton offers extensive guided services for its visitors, helping them navigate the vast terrain and providing proper safety briefings and backcountry protection gear to decrease the danger of unexpected injury or avalanches. Famously, Silverton also offers helicopter drops for skiers and riders seeking an adrenaline-inducing experience of a lifetime.
