Portillo, Chile Conditions Report: Wind Buff is Good Stuff Itโs been another great week here in Portillo, the weather has been unsettled with a few cloudy days and a little snow. Off piste itโs been pretty firm low down, so the smart skiers have been hiking to the higher shadier aspects to find soft snow. The classic chute โSuper Cโ has been skiing really well recently with powder at the start of the week, and smooth wind buff today. On the groomed runs the coverage is still fantastic with good snow all the way down to the base of Juncallilo, the conditions are getting springlike, so the runs are hard and fast in the mornings then soften as the days progress. VIDEO: Getting Dangerous in Las Lenas |The Les Couloir This is as tight as a couloir can get. The move that Aymar makes in the cruz is pretty nuts… The consequence was really high. Was this a good idea? Was it worth it? SnowBrains | September 1, 2015 5 Comments
Trip Report: It’s Not Over Until It’s Over in Sweden When the weather gods set their minds to flush the early summer climbing season down the drain, living in Sweden can be harsh. Though if you’re in luck that can change. In late June it did for me, as I got the news that ร re ski resort would start opening up the lifts for skiers above treeline, and simultaneously getting an invitation from a friend to come stay at his place in ร re and do some summer skiing. An offer like that you simply do not refuse, especially not while the Stockholm sport climbing is being pinned down by a virtual genesis. Trip Report Guest Author | August 31, 2015 0 Comments
Cody Townsend Brings Us Something Different in “Conquering the Useless” “This year was a bit different. Some of the hardest decisions of my skiing life were made this year. I set out on a different path, into uncharted territory. Seeking new horizons, new approaches and new mountains, it provided me with some of the biggest challenges I’ve dealt with and because of that, some of the greatest experiences. All told, as a note to my followers, I set out to produce a movie this year with some close friends. It’s probably not what you’re used to seeing of me, but I do hope you’ll enjoy it.” – Cody Townsend Movie Trailer SnowBrains | August 31, 2015 0 Comments
Trip Report: 16 Days Chasing Patagonian Powder by Van, Part 2 My alarm sounds and I turn over quickly in my sleeping bag to silence its painful noise. Iโve already been awake, wiping the dripping moisture from our ceiling off my nose, forehand and face. Itโs warm and raining outside. The inside of the van is like a small, white, igloo. Its cold and it takes everything I have to climb out of my ancient, green, hand-me-down, Argentinian sleeping bag, hop into the front seat of the van and turn on the engine. She rumbles briefly as I turn the key, […] Featured Article TJ David | August 31, 2015 0 Comments
Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: A Week of Storms It’s been a wild week at Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina. It stormed every day this week with some storm days bringing so much wind that the ski resort was unable to open. All those stormed dropped plenty of snow up high. Around 6-feet of snow has fallen in the past week on the upper elevations of Catedral. Visibility has been tough this week, but if you were willing to work for it, there were some great turns to be had. They were even able to the Nubes chair open a time or two this week. The snow was mostly good up high with a few days of uber dense, wet […] Conditions Report SnowBrains | August 30, 2015 1 Comment
Bariloche, Argentina Conditions Report: Today was the Day Today, was a spectacular day at Catedral ski resort in Bariloche, Argentina. It was our second splendiferous day in a week since last Monday was brilliant. The day started with 4-10″ of new snow on top of a crunchy/hard layer and dense fog up top. We feared the day would be a wash with great snow and no visibility. After hiking Nubes three times and getting some terrible visibility and some OK visibility, the sun finally popped and the Nubes chair opened up. We ripped two high speed laps on the Nubes chair that were absolutely amazing. Full speed, slashing turns, laughing, hitting […] Conditions Report Miles Clark | August 10, 2015 1 Comment
Ohau, NZ Conditions Report: Fresh Lines All Day Ohau I love to ski! Ohau, New Zealand is a skiers/snowboarders paradise that most of the world hasn’t found yet. Ohau has been hit by several storms this season depositing lots of snow but unfortunately high winds have followed most of those storms and re-deposited that snow elsewhere. The snow that is around is fresh for days but watch out for lots of hidden sharks just under the surface in more exposed areas. The summit currently has the best snow on the mountain with smooth consistent powder, it’s well worth the short hike. Conditions Report Marian Krogh | August 1, 2015 0 Comments
