One Foot of Snow Forecasted for Lake Tahoe This Weekend | Snow Levels Down to 4,500′ NOAA is forecasting our first “decent” storm of the season this weekend for Lake Tahoe, CA. They’re forecasting a foot or more of snow. Snow levels will start at 7,000-feet on Friday before dropping to 4,500-feet Saturday. We know two things for sure: 1. If this storm happens it will be the official beginning of winter stoke in Tahoe 2. If this storm happens people will be out skiing powder in Tahoe and we’ll be reporting IT STILL APPEARS THAT A FOOT […] Weather SnowBrains | October 27, 2014 0 Comments
Mt. Shasta, CA Season Summary & Outlook: Mt. Shasta is no stranger to setting new records. Our personal favorite, the February 1959 event which had the highest single snowstorm total of 189″/15+ feet sounds amazing right about now. 2014 was however the complete opposite. Severe drought has withered California and forest fires threaten much of the American west. The climbing season on Mt. Shasta started and is finishing earlier due to a snowpack that was approximately 30% […] Guest Author | September 9, 2014 2 Comments
Friday Fun: Man Drives Car Onto Tuolumne Meadows, CA I drove up through Yosemite National Park’s Tioga Pass highway this past Friday. When I reached 8,600-foot high Tuolumne Meadows, one of our greatest national treasures, I found a car parked right in the middle of the meadows. Its owner had his family in the car and was leaning on the trunk. His car was stuck and his idea of joyriding the meadows had backfired blindingly. I don’t think the meadows were hurt too bad […] Miles Clark | May 15, 2014 4 Comments
Tioga Pass, CA Report: Chuting Ellery Bowl in Pow on May 7th It’s May 6, 2014 and it’s dumping big fat wet flakes in June Lake, Ca. Is it accumulating? No. But at only 7,800 ft, that’s not surprising in spring. It has to be sticking above 10,000 ft. Right? Right?! After a meager — but fun — winter every little scrap garners excitement, at least in me. Most sane people around these parts are climbing in the Gorge or Yosemite or the Happy’s. But there are definitely a few of us diehards out there. You know who you are, all 20 of you. I’m sure you were out there, somewhere, on this same day. If we ever meet, I’ll buy you a drink. It just reopened again yesterday and it’s gotta be lookin’ good up there. The terrain on Sonora Pass is solid with a plethora of easy options right off the pass. The easiest tour is to […] SnowBrains | April 29, 2014 0 Comments
Lake Tahoe Backcountry Report: 3 Pow Laps on Echo Peak – April 3rd With 3 feet of fresh pow accumulating in the past few days, followed by a day of clear skies and relatively cold temperatures, it seemed like prime time to venture out into the backcountry. The fact that avi danger was reported as ‘low’ for all elevations and aspects boosted our confidence. We chose Echo Peak as our playground for the day, with the intention to do multiple hikes around there. […] Conditions Report Sara K | April 7, 2014 0 Comments
